Came across this earlier and found it very interesting indeed. I don't live in America and have no intention of living there but, some of you may be keen so I hought I'd share (I also found the article very interesting).

Would you consider taking up any of these cities on their offer?

It's similar here in Australia where some small towns offer you a home to rent for $1 per week for a year if you move there

I like the Detroit option really. ....

see you not only get the house, but you get to practice what it would be like to live in a total economic collaspse. You'd be defending your home sted against looters and trying to keep alive while the world is collapsing around you.

This has saved some rural comunities and I can't understand why more people don't do it.

Neat post. Maybe those aren't the most desirable places to live (I'd pay to not live in Detroit) but it's cool to know about options like those. Thanks for posting.

Alaska is the only one without "stings attached". Straight up oil dollars for you to get 1250... per year? Less than 4 dollars a day? In Alaska that wouldn't pay for one gallon of gas. Null and void.

I saw a show once where a boat trip up river revealed all these cabins along the shore. The guide explained they were "temporarily abandoned" and any one could move in and live there if they wanted to for free. Its just that the last owners disappeared without a trace so that is why they are available.

And I was thinking, wow cool! And then, wait...what?

Haha I think you might of missed the boxing kangaroo and green and gold colors in my profile mate

I remember seeing a few years ago on the news when places were doing that, I think one of them in addition to Robinvale was Queenstown in Tasmania.

I absolutely love Tassie but that town...exception to the rule!

And in Robinvale (Victoria, Australia), they were giving away a free round the world holiday for any nurse that would stay in the hospital longer than 2 years.
Given that its full of drunk violent Aboriginals, I dont know how well this worked.

Country Victoria in general is full of violent drunks..not necessarily Aboriginal although I know what you mean and it's another topic all together.

People think country Victoria is some sort of laid back farming land, care free etc...

It's actually more violent than most of Melbourne..

How is that working socialism? What has free stuff got to do with socialism? Socialism is the workers ownership of the means of production, in direct opposition to capitalism (private ownership). I think you are confusing it with liberalism, which [mostly] supports capitalism with a social safety net.

Liberalism is free stuff and hand-outs from the government. Don't believe the lies when they try to tell you that is socialism (or even 'left-wing').

"Liberalism is not socialism and never will be", Winston Churchill, Liberal Party candidate 1908.
