Defending earth

I dont know about you lot but i find it odd that nobody has considered setting up defences to protect earth if need be. we have proven that life is out there by fossils found in astoids that entered our system andended up on earth. so why havent we set up orbital defences for the sake of just in case. we absolutely dont know whats out there and we dont know if anything wants to kill us. What are your thoughts on this

How can you defend earth, if you don't know what might attack you?
How do you prepare yourself for something like that?
I don't know if the government knows more about aliens, maybe they do.
But if they don't know anything about it, its hard to prepare yourself for a possible attack.
but that's my opinion :p

We haven't proven there is any intelligent life, I'm not even sure if the fossil thing is true.

Either way there's several reasons:
- It costs thousands of dollars to get just 1kg of something in to space.
- These weapons would have to be maintained somehow.
- We have never experimented with weapons in space.
- It's not a good idea to try to intimidate a potentially friendly race.
- The chances of us being attacked are minuscule.
- And most of all, if they have mastered space travel and come here to attack, do you really think our pathetic lead expelled by an explosion weapons will stand a chance? Could we even aim and shoot fast and accurately enough?

What are you proposing? A bunch of satellites with big laser guns pointed out into space? Just how advanced do you think power cells would have to be for planetary defense? Unfortunately our current level of tech just isn't up to snuff for protecting an entire planet from some kind of a crazy alien invasion. Not only that, but the staggering amount of platforms needed would just exceed the worlds current economic capabilities.

The real question here is:
How do you know we DONT have a system already in place hmmm?????

Also, when you fire a gun in space you're going to have to apply a counter force in the opposite direction, or your gun will end up somewhere else.

if they have energy shields then you can be sure that they cant hold them forever. sooner or later they'll run out of the energy needed to maintain that shield even if it regenerates over time. and if we fire at the ships attecking us then they'll at least be distracted long enough to arm our missiles. and if we can hone them all into one space then we can fire those missiles at that area and remote detonate them like a bomb creating a huge explosion whatever is attacking us has to avoid. Also we can update our weopons overtime instead of building the basic design from scratch.

we dont need lasers. just ingenuity and a basic strategy worked out. also wats wrong with using machine guns that we can replace with lasers when we have the tech

Yeah, because if they have energy shields they're not going to have advanced weapons that can destroy us with no problem or anything....

Because as SM pointed out, you need a counter force to offset the repulsive force from firing a kinetic round from a space platform. It just isn't feasible at this point and time in our history.

but we can distract them long enough to alert people and arm our missiles. it doesnt have to be big. eg one does not carry a big heavy machine gune on their back. they carry peperspray in their pocket. still a highly affective way of defending yourself

Yeah but what if they just use this huge emp bomb that will destroy all our electronics?
I saw the show: curiosity alien invasion are we ready?
And if an alien invasion really happens they might just destroy all our electronics.
There's nothing much we can do if they drop an EMP bomb on us

Its not feasible at the moment that we could mount any kind of conventional defence against creatures that crossed interstellar space to get here.

At the moment we are pretty much defenceless against a big dumb rock hurtling through space.

We could own the solar system if we want to, we simply have to make it a priority and it isnt at the moment. We are foolish shortsighted creatures.

It is possible that there already are some precautionary defensive strategies in place.


But there is no proof of other life in the Universe. Even if there was, there is no proof that they want to destroy Earth.

Hypothetically speaking: Even if they did want our planet destroyed, why would they waste their time and resources by doing it. We don't need any help. Us humans are already doing a mighty fine job of destroying this planet. We'll get there eventually. they can just sit back and watch, and laugh.

attach rockets to the back of the guns and create a force equal or more powerful to the launching of the bullet

not if we disable our defences before the emp hits and place them back online afterwards. they cant venture through an emp themselves without disabling their weopons

If we put weapons in space we will turn them on ourselves.

That's why we have a treaty for the no weapons in space.


Besides if they have the tech to get here from there, they have the tech to kick our butts.

it doesnt matter if something can bypass your defences. what matters is you tried to defend your home, your family. Your children! from something that wants to destroy you. how could you face your family in a time of peril if you didnt even try to protect yourself? answer me that.
