My guess is that the settlers do not want children walking past their settlement because it is the children who are constantly throwing stones at the settlers!

Back in the day, there was an outbreak of swine-fever and the 'authorities' advised the people to not eat pork. This information was included in the holy books, kind of like health and safety advise. The OT contains much guidance for day to day considerations that were relevant at the time/s of writing. Shellfish were 'outlawed' for human consumption as bottom feeders were also considered to cause ill health if eaten.
