Thanks OP

Im thinking Natural formations as others have stated.
I just think if it is a monument or statue it would be finished off around the neck area would be squared off. ie like a statue should. And roundness of it all just looks natural.

I asked my 2 year old what it was in the picture and even he knew what it was. He said "head". Amazing find!

And here's one from the moon:

Not sure what the Google Earth coordinates are for either of them

Ok, let's suppose this was sculptured by an ancient martian race. If so, they sure look like fat bald monks.

It is quite a remarkable formation!

It reminds me of the "Indian with an iPod" in North America:

The pyramids and sphinx are thousands of years old and they still look pretty good.

It looks like it has a mustache

A Pyramid is a very basic shape. Viewed from above, it is basically a square. So there really isn't much "detail" to be destroyed over time.

The Sphinx may look good to us today, but consider a few things. It is basically proven the face/head has been re-sculpted at least once. The body is in bad shape, but still recognizable. It too, in more modern times, has been restored. Plus, the Sphinx was mostly under sand for quite a long time.

If you believe that aliens are still alive and well on Mars today, then there is no reason to believe they couldn't be "maintaining" this head/face on Mars. But personally I don't. If you believe this is from an ancient civilization of Mars, then it would most likely be tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years old. Much much older than anything on the Earth, and exposed to a more extreme environment, I personally don't believe that such a detailed face would still be intact after so long.

That's not to say I don't believe that there was a civilization on Mars a long time ago, but that's a whole different thread

Is google earth not reputable with this sort of thing? Are there other programs/sources for one to view the surface of Mars in this manner? Or at least be able to see which part of the planet I am viewing in correlation to the rest of the surface area?

Fair questions. I was being a little harsh. I get ticked when people think that poking around Google Moon/Mars?Sky amounts to "serious research". It's not, and I have explained why in previous posts.

That said, they are fun and are useful for (to use your own words) "see which part of the planet I am viewing in correlation to the rest of the surface area." It's just important to realize their limitations.

Once you have an area-of-interest, check for higher-resolution imagery. The best sites for this are Malin Space Science System's catalogue of 212,000 Mars Global Surveyor images, or the University of Arizona's 70,000+ collection of Mars Reconaissance Orbiter high-resolution photos. Note that the MRO is an active ongoing mission that is controlled by the University. If the area you want hasn't been imaged yet, you can request that they do so at this site.

Hope this helps.

I believe there is life on Mars, I believe there was once intelligent life on Mars, my belief is that only non intelligent life remains there now, a remnant of long lost civilization. While I do think there are structures, ruins and fossils left by a former civilization, I think this picture although fantastic is a natural formation.

Actually it's not... I recently saw n exhibit on a cruise ship of about 11 different formations which look identical to some other common object, up to and including a big Mac ...

Cool, is that a natural formation and where is it located?

What you said about it being more worn if it were extremely old sound logical to me.
Plus, why would it be laying flat out like that unless it was like nasca plains symbols that could be
viewed from a balloon made from animal skins ( just saying )? If there was a great atomic battle on earth
or show of force as some finds indicate then who's to say it could not have happened on mars?
Still, I believe it's a natural formation. Like an old tree viewed at dusk, the mind struggles to make sense of the
shadowy image it is perceiving..so chance forms can take on all sorts of familiar identies.

That is definitely interesting.Although I believe the original 'Face on Mars" was not "a trick of light and shadows", this one wouldn't really make sense. It's a "sideways" view- whereas the original was "face-up" in order to be seen from above.....
