Paper: Documents show US funding Syrian opposition

news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON – The State Department has been secretly financing opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad, The Washington Post reported, citing previously undisclosed diplomatic documents provided to the newspaper by the WikiLeaks website.

One of the outfits funded by the U.S. is Barada TV, a London-based satellite channel that broadcasts anti-government news into Syria, the Post reported Sunday. Barada's chief editor, Malik al-Abdeh, is a cofounder of the Syrian exile group Movement for Justice and Development.

The leaked documents show that the U.S. has provided at least $6 million t

Caught red handed. See the civil war in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Syria, etc. All these countries are overthrowing the govts. because the U.S. is instigating the opposition by funding them.

The Obama administration has reached out to Assad's regime, hoping to persuade it to change its policies regarding Israel, Lebanon, Iraq and support for extremist groups. In January, the U.S. stationed an ambassador in Damascus, the capital, for the first time in five years.

The Post said it was not clear from the WikiLeaks documents whether the U.S. was still financing Assad's opponents, though they showed funding had been set aside through September 2010.

Syrian activists have been staging protests against Assad's authoritarian regime for more than a month. More than 200 people have been killed as security forces tried to crush the protests.

US only wants to cause unrest in free nations such as Syria and Libya, places where US is the Ayatollah of the regime, US is trying hard to keep them in power.

For example in Egypt, US told Mubarak to go to be replaced by the Military which Mubarak was part of, which gets billions of dollars of military aid. That way US can control the transition, and lead it towards another US puppet.

The same happened in Tunisia. In Libya where they couldn't do it, they caused a civil war, which they are openly taking part in.

Syria they tried to send weapons through Lebanon, but failed miserably as :Lebanon is controlled by the opposition now.

Bahrain is still torturing peaceful protesters to death, while US is amazingly silent, as if we don't know why.

No they are overthrowing all the govts. of the ME. Think about it, they know that the people are getting tired of their govts. So what do they do, they make the current govts. expendable. So the new govt. would be looking like a democratic govt. that the people are clamoring for. But in reality its all supported by the U.S.

but what about extremists? Many of these governments have kept them in check. If these government falls then the extremists will take over. Look at Libya some of these rebels are the very same Al Qaida fighters who fought against our troops in Iraq

now that sounds like Deja Vu ,
they said the same exact thing
about Saddam, Gadaffi and now
Assad.

Did anybody see the other thread
where Iran was supporting Assad's
regime.

We have a proxy war between the US/Israel
vs Iran.

Weren't these the same
exact match-ups during the Crusades.

HOLY WAR !!!

Not enough to take over, its way too fast for them hence why the govts. are falling quickly. Saudi Arabia is next after Bahrain. I read an article that the Saudis are looking to China for support since they distrust the U.S. since they didn't do anything to help Egypt, that in fact they instigated the revolution.

They need controlled transition like Egypt and Tunisia. If they create war and instability, that would cause an uncontrollable situation like in Libya. US is in a crazy situation, no matter what they do, there is only two outcome, either Qaddafi will hold on to power (which the West sees as unacceptable), or Libya will turn in to an Afghanistan, a long proxy war, and a civil war after the proxy war because the rebels are Muslims.

What intrigues me about these leaks is the timing. In the article, it didn't specify if the documents were just released to the news, or if they are part of the overall leaks from November. IF these leaks are new, brand new, then we could be seeing the power players a few steps ahead of the game. It would be a good move to leak this info now, which is certainly able to be spun positively through our media, as it could possibly provoke Iran and Syria into making a move to initiate open conflict. I'm starting to think Assange is just part of the game.

Even if Assange actually released this info to damage efforts by the US in the region, then, well, it can still be sold as a good thing to the American people. And probably still lead to conflict.

Interestingly enough, the money was funneled to Barada TV beginning in 2005-2006;

Barada TV is closely affiliated with the Movement for Justice and Development, a London-based network of Syrian exiles. Classified U.S. diplomatic cables show that the State Department has funneled as much as $6 million to the group since 2006 to operate the satellite channel and finance other activities inside Syria. The channel is named after the Barada River, which courses through the heart of Damascus, the Syrian capital.

source

It claims a number of Syrian opposition groups got funded from the US around that time frame.

Who was president then? Not Obama.

I don't believe it.

The Source is undisclosed wiki-leaks?

I don't see why the US would need to back revolutionaries like this.

These people are rioting against government corruption and collusion, why then would they do the same thing?

and thus creating a democratic middle east union in the region, all prime minsters, leaders must obey the beast of america or otherwise you will be overthrown, quicker.

The reason they are doing this is because they want to cut off russia, chinas oil, minerals supply lines, however China, Russia wont be cut off that easily.

I believe the rebels in Libya will not win, NATO wont risk sending ground troops starting a flare war with russia, china, they know this thats why NATO is laying low now.

No, the article doesn't say Obama approved the funding, it says Obama questioned the funding as his administration was trying to reach out to Assad. No where does it say Obama approved this program, it was a holdover from Bush.

If you want to get mad about the US funding opposition groups in Syria then lay the blame on the regime that ran that program. In 2005/2006 that was Bush. You can see from the article that Obama's admin questioned, but didn't override it.

Take the blinders off, or at least learn to read - this money was spent in 2006 - that makes it Bush's program.

So maybe you meant to say "Bush is pure evil". I know facts don't mean to much these days but at least blame the right person.

Did you not even bother to read the article? The program began in 2005/2006 under Bush. I understand your sole purpose on this site is partisan bickering, in fact you seem to post about nothing but Obama, but even you should be able to realize that this program was created by, and funded by, GW Bush given the time line.

Unless of course you want to add time travel to Obama's list of skills.
