Yep.. now multiply that 1000 fold, and you begin to understand just how many desperate people there are at this very second.

Imagine being hit by all this and not having any phone/net/contact with the outside world to know what is going on and when help is going to arrive.

Its a sobering thought while we all sit comfortably in our homes.

The deeper the epicenter the less damage on the surface. A shallow earthquake causes the most lateral damage. So the closer the epicenter is to the surface, the worse the shack waves are

I have a friend that live there but he is updated without problem just watching TV. All TV channels (public and private), he said, is talking about earthquake only nothing else. No sponsors, no attractions nothing... just non-stop news. For what he said and I saw myself, the TV channels are working as emergency channel to alert about any earthquakes and possible tsunames

i would just like to give you a star for all your efforts i appricate all you have had to offer as i am not getting alot her in n.z

fair enough i agree i guess all the people of japan will be in apnic as it is already and if they didn't have enough to deal with now this
which is scary atleast they have put the evacuation zone to 20km now i think thats what the last poster said would you be able to tell me is this far enough away with the level we are seeing now?.

and i also noticed they are trying to save the 3rd reactor is it sorry ive read so much i shoul have quoted by putting in fresh water in it which i guess is good iof they can save this one i hope it does not meltdown either.

what is it about the sea water that kills the reactor or make it unuseable again?.

She was also saying most people were *choosing* to sleep in their cold cars instead of buildings because they were terrified of the aftershocks. Really sheds light on how terrifying this situation is continuing to be, not just was.

Once you pour in seawater which has salt in it and Boric acid which is not meant for that reactor.. it will NEVER start up again.

It is essentially a last resort for that type of reactor.

I can vouch for that. The JN channels are almost ALL news directly related to the earthquake, tsunami, and yes, the nuclear reactor. The Japanese are less prone to panic and more prone to preparation and orderliness. We're getting plenty of updates through Japanese TV/radio, US media, military radio, and internet. Nobody is in the dark in Tokyo unless they choose to be.

Well, and I have to say as I keep doing, I am no expert, I think it is a matter of how long the radiation leaks. I enough gets out there is no telling how far it can go, but I havent seen anything to indicate its gotten into the jet stream or anything even close to that yet, so in that aspect, its safER.

I dont really understand why they are trying to save any of them at the moment, sounds as though they are in grave shape. Although, I guess most of their electricity is nuclear, so if they all go down, that country is going to be hurting.

The salt in the saltwater contaminates things. I am not well read enough on it to know exactly how, but it is considered a last ditch effort.

Wish the links you provided were in English. I was getting good feed yesterday on AlJazeera but now not much there on the quakes, etc.

From what I've heard, it's not the salt in the water that's bad, it's all the impurities in the seawater, and it will definitely start up again, but can never be used safely, so yes, it must be trashed.
