I don't care about your non-concern for us on the east coast.....Thanks for throwing your 2 cents in though!!

Now back on topic, does anyone know if this was the actual earthquake or the pre-quake trembles?? Hopefully that was it and back to normal for us, but this is causing mass panic in PA since this NEVER happens....

I knew Pa. near me had one in the 90's, Found it from 1994 near Reading Pa. I am not sure about the rest of the east Coast, but did remember this one.

Published: January 17, 1994 SIGN IN TO E-MAIL PRINT Southeastern Pennsylvania experienced its largest earthquake on record this weekend, but it caused little damage and was light by the standard of geophysicists. The record was set by one of two tremors that hit the area on Saturday night. The first quake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale of ground motion; the second measured 4.6, according to the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. The epicenters were near Wyomissing Hills, just west of Reading.

People are panicking due to a simple 6.0 earthquake...

Can you imagine if Washington DC got nuked? Mass pandemonium.

People need to man up...

What exactly are you contributing to the discussion? Unless you felt this earthquake and would like to provide your input? It's people like you that halt discussion. Either contribute, or leave.

Bearing in mind this is actually stronger than a nuke! Perhaps it was a nuke?

To the person who asked if these are on the same latitude, YES almost exactly.

Yes I will indeed. It will have to be from my records as I just can't get in to USGS. Back in a while.

This may not be as large as some in the world, but it is the largest in recorded history for the area.

Since at least 1774, people in central Virginia have felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from infrequent larger ones. The largest damaging earthquake (magnitude 4.8) in the seismic zone occurred in 1875. Smaller earthquakes that cause little or no damage are felt each year or two. Earthquakes in the central and eastern U.S., although less frequent than in the western U.S., are typically felt over a much broader region.

USGS Summary

Thoughts and prayers to those in the affected areas.

Be Well.

Do you want this just between Japan and US? There are 1688 (0 to 180) + 116 (-180 to 0) between 37 N and 38.5 N since 09 Mar. Narrow it down a bit for me.

All bar 3 of the first 1688 set are in Japan.

So far, reports about the power plants they seem to be safe. Most, if not all, have switched to the diesel generators. They are on alert but at the lowest alert. There is a nuclear power plant very close to the epicenter in VA

Either they are getting in on the scaremongering or they are being cautious. If they don't say it and it is they will be accused to hell and back of being incompetent.

Truth of the matter is that they have absolutely no way of telling.

If there is a bigger shock it could be around 7. SERIOUSLY bad news for that area.

Just got in from work, and my FB page is full of folks who felt this thing in E KY. And sister in NC felt it too.
DC is in a bad spot when you look at RSOE hisz.rsoe.hu... Earthquake and hurricane path.
That US portion of the map is lit up like a tree. Going over to my Arkansas maps and check in with that thread to see how they are, they get recurring swarms. Kudos Puterman, keep up the good work.
