Strange one here

A masterful understatement!!!!

There is no recorded quake of mag 5+ with 300km in the past 100 years. That makes it totally weird, not just strange
.

There is however 1 < mag 5 in the last 100 years and that is almost in the same spot

Yeah, Its not even close to nearest suspects, the French Polynesian Nuclear Test sites.

Interesting detail over 1600km to the east, Wilkes Fracture Zone on Google Earth though, Latitude: 8.27°S, Longitude: 107.9W

The Pacific is such a huge area and we know so little of what is going on there

A massive 15 +/- 4 cu km lava flow field covers about 220 sq km of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) axis crest at about 8 degrees South. The high reflectivity of the lava flow indicates a very youthful age. This, coupled with teleseismically recorded earthquakes in 1964, 1965, and 1969 of an unusual magnitude along this segment of the EPR and the detection of a helium megaplume of a volume consistent with the eruption of a lava flow of this volume detected several years later at a distant location consistent with inferred circulation patterns at mid-ocean depths led Macdonald et al. (1989) to suggest that part or all of this lava field may have been emplaced in the past 25 years, during one or more eruptions coincident with the earthquakes and onset of the helium plume.

Explains the various mystery quakes I have seen on the SNZO LISS over the years that didn't match up with anything on USGS or the other Networks

QUAKE HIT ITALY 7.7 1KM DEPTH

earthchanges.ning.com...

FALSE alarm

Italy earthquake report was false

Last update: June 12, 2011 at 5:01 am by By Armand Vervaeck 1 Comment

We are very sorry to have alarmed our readers for an Italian earthquake which did not happen.

Earthquake-Report is informing people as fast as possible on ongoing events. We receive data from many sources and will inform the data immediately to our readers ‘as is’, also stating that if only one source reports the earthquake, it has to be confirmed by other agencies soon thereafter. The current trigger was a GDACS report (see link below) automatically updated by a computer on: 6/12/2011 2:56:57 AM UTC (6 minutes after the event).
Probably this earthquake report was based on a machine generated report which was not revised by a seismologist.

Not in the least bit dodgy. That is pretty much standard wording that I use myself.

If you don't say it you could be liable if someone did something stupid on that basis of what was on your web-page.

That was my point as a reference to the reliability of that one source being used as a primary source of info and would hope people would scroll all the way to the bottom (maybe dodgy wasnt the best word, I know its connotation is inclined towards tricky or chancy but i attribute it to weird for some reason lol). It might of been plain as day down there to some, how many could most likely jump to conclusions that this was happening and real based on a want or belief of it to be true for whatever reason.
And I think its just scary all round that people actually need to use that disclaimer at all for those types of people.

Okay not sure if this is normal or not but there has just been another quake, 5.7 this time. Same depth as the above quakes. All different ones though. Just emailed Sky News asking why no mention on the News of these quakes. If I understand it correctly, Depth and not Magnitude are the key ingredients for a Bad quake, baring in mind these in Ethiopia are of roughly the same depth and size of those that hit NZ a while ago yet nothing mentioned anywhere in the MSM

From what i know its not typical for a series of quakes to hit this area in such a swarm,
14 light to moderate quakes have hit the region since earlier today, Its a rare area to get moderate quakes the last majorish one being in 1984 at that was a 6.2.

This evenings ones do have the potential to have caused some damage but as of yet no reports on injuries or damage, so lets keep our fingers crossed for them that this is just a lil shake to release some strain.
