Actually, this started with the previous update to Opera, last week or so.
But maybe a bit worse with the upgrade to 10.53.

Just reading a page CPU usage can hover at better than 55%.
Open 5 or so tabs, and usage is higher and memory was at 450,000+ K.

This is startling because Opera was never such a resource hog.
I am at a loss as to why the sudden problem/

running Windows Vista, Windows Firewall Control, Avira, Malwarebytes, WinPatrol...all current

I am sorry but for some reason your post comments are not showing up in my browser at least there are a number of post threads that are showing as blank in the post section.

Your browser may be using a lot of memory because of Flash which is what all the video and animation etc. that is on almost all web sites today.

I had a similar issue with it using Firefox.

I installed Flashblock as a addon and it got everything under control.

Opera maybe the fastest browser for loading pages but it sucks in my opinion.

AS you have found out it is a resource hog.

Just a note after I posted this response, your OP could be read.

I don't have any buttons on the bottom of my Opera window.

FWIW, I found this issue on the Opera forum.

regarding RAM
my.opera.com...

regarding memory usage
my.opera.com...

Seems to be affecting Opera 10.52 and 10.53.
I know similar issues affected FF some time back, and in fact made me seek out and use Opera for a time.
Never really adjusted to Opera since FF is far cooler, IMHO.
But, my husband likes Opera and he isn't happy that Opera is suddenly so cumbersome

See, it never used to be a usage hog, used to be a lean and fast browser.
Guess it is having some growing pains.

The last builds look untested, like if they rushed their release for some reason.

I also had some problems at first but it looks like they got cured with release 52.

At the moment, Opera is using 380MB of my computer's memory, but it has 12 tabs open, some with many images.

Firefox is using 290MB with 6 tabs open and also many images.

Change to another browser? I've been seen this many times before, I have no way but uninstall it. I am not genius enough
