I was just reviewing the quakes in the CA/MEX swarm. Did anyone notice that we did in fact have foreshocks to the 7.2? Is the 7.2 the main event or a forshock? Heres a list of prior quakes to the 7.2.

Don't know about fore-shocks - more like about 7000!

The graph below is one year cumulative for the region we are currently looking at, UP TO but NOT INCLUDING the current swarm.

That's an average of just under 20 a day, but you can see a peak last Nov at around 120.

'spose I gotta do it!! Here is the mags for the same period.

Oh, why Thank You for doing that - lol - so then - what the heck is going on there?

So, all of these ones that have been posted since the 7.2 are just your average ordinary day there? - excluding some of the larger events?

This makes no sense to me!! - Do you have any ideas?

Was there some sort of trigger event that started this? - I will have to investigate

Good afternoon,

Noone commented on my quake map pics (pg. 87) - boohoo
we are already up to 2315 quakes on that particular map.

Anyway, I guess Mt. Etna has erupted, there's a thread about it.

I gotta go on a 4 hour road trip, back later.

I do think that this might want to be it's own thread - I thought I smelled volcano with all these quakes in CA/Mex.

Cerro Prieto Volcano - John Seach

Baja California, Mexico

32.418 N, 115.305 W
summit elevation 223 m
Lava dome

Cerro Prieto volcano is located at the northern end of the gulf of California, 177 km SE of San Diego, and 30 km from the US border. The volcano consists of a low lava dome.

Cerro Prieto geothermal field is located at the volcano. The system is a large high-temperature (280-350ºC), liquid dominated field, contained in sedimentary rocks. The geothermal field began producing electricity in 1973. Cerro Prieto field is estimated to maintain its current capacity until the year 2030.

The volcano is located in a transition between the East Pacific Rise and the strike-slip San Andreas fault system. It is one of the few areas where on-land spreading is observed.

The heat source for the volcano is thought to be a magma body at a depth of 5–6 km. There is a significant correlation between increases of sustained fluid extraction at the field and earthquakes, with delays of about 1 yr.

An earthquake swarm occurred under Cerro Prieto volcano in Mexico between 8-11 February 2008. The seismic swarm began on 8 February 2008 at 11:12 pm (Pacific Time) with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A second magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred on 11 February 2008 at 10:29 am (Pacific Time) about 4 miles further south. Both events, were shallow, at a depth of less than 3 miles. Sixteen earthquakes greater than magnitude 3 were recorded over 2.5 days. The two magnitude 5 earthquakes were tectonic, consistent with activity on the Cerro Prieto fault.

Cerro Prieto Volcano Eruptions
The last eruption at the volcano is unknown, but may be within the past 10,000 years.

So with all this activity going on, and the number of volocanos involved, I've been keeping a close eye on the cascade range.

Looks like both Baker and Rainier have had their fair share of mirco quakes today and check out the wierd signal from about 1640 to 1700 UTC LINK. I thought it was a recalibration or something, but if you look HERE you'll find it on most of the seismos.

Here is a list of the recorded quakes for the PNW....a little more activity, but nothing to run screaming about....

I felt this quake!!! I was sitting here trying to find any trace of it but it just wasn't showing up yet. I knew right away. Like a 'thud' you might get from a very large truck going by, only there wasn't one. No rolling or anything, just the bang.

Check out my earlier thread one page back. The mountains are a little uneasy today!
