Atheist soldier claims harassment

www.cnn.com

Like hundreds of young men joining the Army in recent years, Jeremy Hall professes a desire to serve his country while it fights terrorism.

But the short and soft-spoken specialist is at the center of a legal controversy. He has filed a lawsuit alleging he's been harassed and his constitutional rights have been violated because he doesn't believe in God. The suit names Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

This drives me nuts. I hate how our troops are treated.

Thoughts? Comments?

Atheists are the targets of unbridled bigotry by theists. I think we all need to stand up and come out of the closet.

well, it's quite old news that atheists soldiers get discriminated against

it's just further proof that there's an Anti-Atheist Conspiracy

i honestly think this is just reprehensible and it's idiotic that this isn't getting more media attention. if this type of discrimination was being targeted at someone else, it would be...

I personally am not atheist, but I do think that it is unfair to be mistreated because of your religion, whatever it may be.

Do any of you people know what the "UCMJ" is?

It is called the Uniform Code of Military Justice and is the law of the military. You don't have a freedom of speech in the military and in some cases you don't speak till you're spoken to and only when you ask for permission to speak. After reading this article it is plane as day to me why this guy got himself into trouble and his being an atheist had NOTHING to do with it.

Known as "the atheist guy," Hall has been called immoral, a devil worshipper and -- just as severe to some soldiers -- gay, none of which, he says, is true. Hall even drove fellow soldiers to church in Iraq and paused while they prayed before meals

you got called a lot worse in boot camp but I don't see him crying about that.

It eventually came out in Iraq in 2007, when he was in a firefight. Hall was a gunner on a Humvee, which took several bullets in its protective shield. Afterward, his commander asked whether he believed in God, .

Now why on earth would he ask him that? Did he ask anyone else? is this a question he asks all those taking a couple bullets to their humvee sheild or just out of the blue he asks THIS guy on THIS day who just HAPPENS to be an Atheist. Yeah riiight. Sounds to me like this guy was doing the same thing I see so many atheists do here on these boards which would have elicited the question coming from the commander in the first place.

Anotherwords he was talking smak about christianity but how convenient not to mention it. How do I know? Because I spent 6 years in the military and know no commander would have just asked me such a question out of the blue but even if one did,, THE LAST thing I would have done is been a smart aleck to a commander like this insubordinate atheist did when he was asked "do you believe in God a simple yes sir or no sir is what is expected from you and he answered "No, but I believe in Plexiglas"

I suppose he might have even got a few to chuckle at his this stupid attempt at jocularity but trust me, it would have been very muffled and under their breath. You don't have freedom of speech and civil liberties in the military the same way you do in civilian life and all the harrassment this Atheist has gotten he brings on himself.

No one with Fort Riley, the Army or that Defense Department would comment about Hall or the lawsuit. Each issued statements saying that discrimination will not be tolerated regardless of race, religion or gender.

Since he doesn't have a religion and Atheists claim they are NOT a religion then I fail to see how he could have been discriminated against according to his religion.

"It's just about time somebody said something."

How about just saying what is asked of you and not be a smart aleck

This whole story is just more poor me bunk by Atheist trying to make a mountain out of the mole hill they themselves create in cases like this

So if this man had been Christian, or Buddhist, would this be any different?

No matter what your religion is, or lack thereof, you do not deserve to be discriminated against, whether it is your place to talk or not.

Why would it be? I realize you are trying to make this a discrimination thing but it isn't according to the story and according to every other avenue this opportunistic Atheist has tried to get his rant heard.

No matter what your religion is, or lack thereof, you do not deserve to be discriminated against, whether it is your place to talk or not.

I concur but it was not discrimination or his speaking out of place, that got his butt in a ringer, it was his smart aleck answer. Read my post.

He is lucky if he doesn't have the same ignorance when a Judge asks him. He answers the same way he did to that commander, it is damn likely they will slap em with contempt.

It was stupid and it was his own fault whats more he KNEW better than to answer that way. Going over his superior officer in the military whe his first avenues to make this mountain out of a mole hill didn't parlay his purse, what does he do? He ignores the chain of command which almost ALWAYS gets you in deeper and just as I said, it did him too.

The answer he gave is no differen't than when other Atheists have to, just have to add that subltle digg when discussing subjects like this rather than just saying no, you don't believe in God. They have to always add that little dig like the flying spaghetti monster etc.

Yeah it might irritate some of your average Christians,, but it will get your butt in some REAL trouble in the military.

This guy should just GET OVER it

and move on

jeez
