It's almost midwinter in South Africa, and in Cape Town the rain is relentless.

Good in one way (the dams are filling up), but not so good in another (people in informal settlements and the homeless are suffering).

But for those of us with homes, isn't it lovely to make a hot bowl of soup?

I recall around 1989, we still had Royco's Asparagus soup.

It was instant soup in a cup, but thick, with croutons.

Nowadays our instant soup is glucose powder with some spices and flavorings.

But, less nostalgic, and closer to cooking:

Does a winter's day leave you with a longing for warm hands and a silent belly?

And while soup in a cup may be as yesterday as sweat bands and mauve leggings, it has really been replaced.

Those plastic containers they once sold hemp or chamomile in, thus the illusion of a health-food.

And yeah, they do have grains and vegetables, at a hefty price for the "convenience".

But the small print?
Where's my magnifying glasses?
Sugar content ... oh my!
Salt content ... did you think it would last on a shelf without a preservative?

So I'd still say:

"Why buy all kinds of gloop,
when you could cook
your very own soup"?

My mum occasionally makes a soup which she either learnt off her mum or in school, I can try to get a recipe but it always seemed like "pot luck" on what it contained!

Usually ham and/or bacon
Potatoes
Leeks
Turnip
Suet pudding/dumplings
Carrots

And probably a few other things, lentils?

Again I can try to get a recipe... Real hearty soup especially on rainy days and the stuff is amazing after a day or two, the veg just soaks up all those juices and the ham flavours intensify.

I love that, maybe I'll steal a recipe the good ol' fashioned way

German potato soup:

We diligently dice the potatoes, before sliding them into the pot where they'll be mashed up anyway:

It's the thought that counts.

When I make a hearty soup, root veges except potato cos I'm nightshades free, I use whole buckwheat instead of barley cos gluten free and any kinda meat on the bone. Fresh turmeric, loads of onion and garlic, leaks, and mushrooms. That is if I can afford to make soup, perhaps it might be stone soup next time.

That looks delicious. We will probably cook that one up.

I buy a whole pumpkin. Cut it up, boil the cuts. Blend. Add butter and a small amount of Indian curry. Heat, stir until creamy.

Dollop of cream on top of the bowlful. Bit of dipping toast. Great on a cold day.

Kind regards,

Bally)

German Beer Cheese Soup.

What?
You can cook with beer?

Just keeping the barrels around for culinary purposes, off course.

So what's the difference between a "soup" and a "stew"?

I'd say, if you can slurp it, it's probably a soup.

But Ramen-style noodles are also slurped.

Aha Halfoldman-san, those are "noodles in a soup".

They kinda got lost and climbed in there.
