KYIV — Russia may have taken the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut Sunday, but forces aligned with Ukraine apparently took a tiny part of Russia on Monday — or so video and photograph footage suggested as of just after noon local time. Ukrainian armored vehicles, including at least one tank, were seen attacking a border post, in the town of Kozinka, in the Belgorod region of southern Russia.

Drone footage, taken from the Ukrainian side of the border, showed a lone tank advancing toward the Russian border checkpoint in Kozinka, the main building of which had several large holes blasted in its exterior walls. A group of three light armored vehicles was also spotted in the same location, with Ukrainian marks — white crosses — clearly painted on their hulls. Footage circulating on social media and purportedly shot inside the checkpoint building showed Russian passports scattered on the floor, a portrait of Vladimir Putin hanging on the wall and a dead border guard.

What seemed to be a relatively simple Ukrainian cross-border raid — not the first of its kind in 15 months of war — soon revealed itself to be a far more ambitious and dug-in incursion into Russian territory. From Kozinka, the counter-invaders advanced toward the larger Russian town of Grayvoron. As of Monday morning, the Ukrainian-aligned forces had advanced 3.5 miles over the border into Russia.

MOSCOW, May 22. /TASS/. A Ukrainian sabotage group infiltrated the Grayvoron District of the Belgorod Region on Monday, regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

According to the latest data, the Russian military and security forces are taking measures to eliminate the enemy and are driving it away from the Russian territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed about the situation.

TASS has put together the highlights of what has been reported about the attack as of now.

The circumstances of the attack
- The infiltration by Ukrainian saboteurs was reported by Gladkov. He said the Russian military, border guards and the servicemen of the National Guard and the Federal Security Service are taking "necessary measures to eliminate the enemy."

- Before that, the governor said two people were injured in a shelling of the village of Glotovo of the Grayvoron District. He said one of the casualties, a woman, who suffered wounds from a mine explosion, had been taken to a hospital in serious condition. The other person, a man, was in a condition of medium gravity.

- The Kremlin later confirmed that a Ukrainian sabotage group had tried to force its way into the Belgorod Region, and the group is now being driven away from the Russian territory and eliminated.

- Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there are sufficient forces and equipment on the scene to combat the saboteurs. He said Putin had been briefed about the incident.

The Kremlin’s assessment
- Peskov said the goal of the sabotage attack is "to divert attention from the Bakhmut area and reduce to a minimum the political effect from the loss of Artyomovsk by the Ukrainian side." The Russian Defense Ministry said into the night of May 21 that the town in Donbass had been fully liberated.

WASHINGTON, May 22. /TASS/. It’s up to Ukraine to decide how it conducts military operations against Russia, Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US Department of State, told reporters on Monday as commented on a Ukrainian sabotage raid in Russia’s Belgorod Region.

"It is up to Ukraine to decide how they want to conduct their military operations," he said at a news conference.

Washington, he said, doesn’t encourage such attacks.

"We have made very clear to the Ukrainians that we don't enable or encourage attacks outside Ukrainian borders," Miller said.

As of right now and even before I wouldn't support the current or previous government into NATO.
Also they definitely do not fit the criteria for membership.
That said I expect some serious changes in Ukraine to meet those standards for NATO but that is a ways off.

NATO didn’t invade Ukraine, Russia did, and remains.

They could leave at any time and end the war. This is an ongoing ramification or Russias choice, and they are paying for it along with Ukraine.

Russia is effectively neutering themselves for the foreseeable future. They can only blame Putin.
