It would appear from Police conference that the 'bomber' wanted to go to the Women's hospital and didn't have any connection to any remembrance day event going on. They still don't know why he wanted to go there.
I will post a link to the press conference once one becomes available.
They say investigations will continue for days ahead.
They have not said if there was any 'faction' involved.

Yes, the only taxis you can get into without pre-booking are hackney cabs.

I think that there is some confusion over the terms being used and what they mean.

You can't hail and uber on the street or one of those airport taxi type hire cars, and most of the time the only vehicles that you can flag down are the official black cabs. But you can pick up any vehicle with the correct permit outside just about any medium sized train station or bus depot. But they are limited to certain parking areas.

I can't see how the cabby could have locked the guy in before the explosion as they were both clearly still in the car when the device went off.
I've added the police press conference comments (link to follow) where they said the 'bomber' wanted to go to the women's hospital.

There are two types of taxi; Private Hire and Hackney Cabs.

Private Hire taxi's are only available through pre-booking usually through a taxi company.
Private hire can not pick up fares from ranks etc.

Hackney cabs tend to operate off designated ranks but can take private hire bookings.

Both types of taxi's are licensed but a Hackney Licence is quite a bit more expensive than a Private Hire Licence.
Both are subject to some rigorous regulations.

In recent years there has been a massive rise in unlicensed taxi drivers operating outside of the law.

a reply to: AaarghZombies Not in Liverpool. The only type of taxi that does not need to be pre-booked is a black "hackney" cab. I've worked on the cabs in Liverpool so I would say I am a bit more knowledgeable than yourself in regards to how they work.

The driver was still in the car when the explosion occured.

BBC radio just reporting taxi driver saved mass casualties by closing the doors.

Good link, thank you.
Here's a YT link to the press conference. Unfortunately, for some reason there is no volume until around the 1 minute mark.

It is possible to lock just the rear doors in some taxi's.

It has been speculated that only the detonators exploded in the blast, possibly explaining how the driver was able to escape relatively unhurt.

Why did the 'bomber' specifically want to go to the Women's Hospital?

Officially designated as a 'Terror incident' now, but no details as to why or by whom?

Its all quite strange and leads itself to random speculation.

Child locks on rear doors probably.
Aren't they in all cars.....not just taxis?

You can lock the doors from the inside. Also, this wasn't breaking news just today. This was being reported on from very shortly after the incident occured yesterday. Infact, it was being discussed here in a different thread at somewhere around this time yesterday afternoon.

That will be the 'child locks' on the back doors at a guess.
Do they even still have them in modern cars?

Ah, thank you.
I was possibly too busy watching Wales defeat Fiji and didn't pay attention to much MSM news. Although I didn't see anything reported until this morning.

By the looks of things that Taxi driver saved a lot of lives.

Hope he's ok.

3 people also been arrested in connection to the incident.

Further searches at other addresses are apparently on the cards for today.

That driver was lucky-it looked like the bomb didn't fully detonate(the deleayed fire after the inital blast may have been the oxidiser burning slowly instead of all in one go as it was probably intended to).
Police are saying it was likley a suicide bomber, and there is only one type of terrorist who use that form of attack-islamists.

At first I speculated that it may have been someone who has lost a loved one in that hospital and was taking revenge for some reason, but I think its more likley it was one of the islam crazies maybe trying to bomb the rememberance service.

Hope the cops catch everyone of the scumbags involved.
