Like that the police there actually declined the offer for armed assistance from the militia.
And an alleged corralling of protesters by police on duty that night into a militia bottleneck.

Only defense I can see for him is maybe the "being a member of a cult" routine.

After the police department turned them down for help, every armed person discovered within the riot should have at the least been relieved of their weapons.
