I'm guessing you're a bit older than me. I've been in a couple of unions in my relatively short life and they were never like that. However, for the main part they were mostly useless and didn't give a #.

One union member saved my job when I was facing unfair dismissal and that was the only time they benefited me. They were happy to take my money the rest of the time and did precisely f# all for me.

Pete Duel shot himself at home and it was ruled a suicide.
But both family and friends argued saying he probably
shot himself accidently playing with fire arm at home.
I remember that very well watched Smith and Jones but
never a big fan. But the guy was just come'n up in Hollywood.
Had a bang'n life in front of him and suddenly dead.

I can't remember who it was put a gun to his head on set
and the concussion from the blank killed him instantly.
But that was just total ignorance and lack of knowledge.

Just because a gun has blanks in it doesn't mean you put
it up to your head and fire it.

Anyroad that Man has just accidentally killed one person and injured another.

When you are handed a firearm, no matter the circumstances, the first thing you are supposed to do is check it for a safe status.

It's the responsibility of the person holding the gun.

Despite a "professional" being contracted to tend to the firearms, you cannot waive gross negligence.

The legal standard for civil case is "foreseeability", and this is not the first time it's happened on a set.
