Its the HOLY Roman Empire...still alive and well and at the heart of whats happening now..a reply to: Rolci
Given the very accurate description of popes up to around 1590 and lack of accuracy for the popes that follow, historians generally conclude that the alleged prophecy is a fabrication written shortly before publication.
One theory to explain the prophecy's creation put forward by 17th-century French priest Louis Moreri, is that it was spread by Cardinal Girolamo Simoncelli in support of his own bid to become pope during the 1590 conclave to replace Urban VII.

The prophecies are worded in a cryptic language so the names are never the real names. The last line in the prophecy goes:
"Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End"

So that's just a prophecy made about 900 years ago about the 112 Popes that were to follow. That list ends with the current Pope. Make of that what you will. I just put it out there for your attention.

Well, the prophecy did not say "no more popes". It just did not go further. Whatever that's supposed to mean. But as things stand at the moment, I would prefer replying to your comment by saying: "What next Pope".
In any case, the current pope seeing the Italians through tribulations seems to be an accurate description of what's going on in Italy right now, wouldn't you say??
