I think China and Iran hid it until they couldn't. By then, it had blown up all out of proportion. I also think they have worse public health structures than maybe most people would think they would (at least in China's case where they've been racing to modernize themselves very, very quickly but still have large areas that are second world or even in some places third).

They also have a tendency to be secretive, so you can't exactly trust the information coming out of those countries.

I'm off to Tenerife on Friday.. thankfully that's not my hotel, although we did look at it. Meant to be going to Italy in the summer too..😱 but that's still 6 months away so🤞

○A couple of questions.. are there still people on the Diamond Princess?

○Those that are being diagnosed AFTER leaving the ship, are they being added to the ships tally or their country of residence? (Ie the Americans that have since been diagnosed on USA soil despite catching it on the ship..where do their numbers fall?)

○I feel like the world is forgetting about China.. I'm so scared for Wuhan. Its frustrating me hugely that we dont have real or believable numbers. ANyone have friends out there with any updates?

○why does everyone think we arent seeing huge numbers in UK and USA/other western countries? I agree with Ketsuko with the fact that if we were dropping like flies they wouldnt be able to hide it.. although I certainly believe that some cases ARE being hidden and people have gag orders in them.. but WHY? What IS this thing.. when are they going to tell us?

○Italy vs england rugby match in Italy at the weekend..can only imagine the amount of British people coming back from that with possible infections!

Eta: in regards to my holiday.. not not going isn't really an option at the moment for one case.. I just wondered what peoples thoughts are on swimming pools? Could the virus survive in that chlorinated water? Salt water?

I think we're still in the early stages in the UK and other countries that had few cases to start with. But the level of travel and globalisation means I think we will all be exposed at some point. Low levels of increase in flu like symptoms and deaths could go under the radar for a short period. Itsly have 'only'had 7 deaths. 7 dead 80 yr olds and/or people with cancer doesn't raise eyebrows. They are only finding cases cos they are testing. Give it a couple weeks when the 'well' succumb to the virus and ICU admissions go up. Then no countries will be able to hide it. Not even Indonesia. That's my thoughts anyway

Re Tenerife. I wouldn't go but my personal circs mean I cannot afford to be quarantined in a foreign country. Risk of actual infection is probably much the same as here I would guess.

Happy as ever to be wrong

Eta: a person who left the Diamond Princess who was negative has now tested positive in Japan according to BNO. Not sure if there is anyone still on the ship

There has been reports on social media, about hospitals around the country, getting patients who think they have corona virus,

Yes, this is one aspect that worries me - a whole bunch of people going to the hpospital out of fear of the CV when all they have is a cold or the flu. That could quickly overwhelm the system.

What really needs to happen is development of a home/self-test kit.

I mean anyone with a 3 figure IQ should know there are cases in the US. More than what has been reported.

I agree. But the question is not how many people may have the virus in their system, the real question is, how many people get serious symptoms, and of those, how many require hospitalization for life-saving treatment, and of those, how many die.

If those numbers are really low, then there is no reason to fear this thing.

The Who for whatever reason has not declared this a pandemic yet, obviously there is money, implications resulting in the procrastination.

For 'whatever reason'? They stated their reason clearly - because, so far, there are no signs of this virus causing serious symptoms in a lot of people, at least outside of China. They did express concern, and rightly so, for the apparent aberrational cases recently reported in Iran and South Korea, and are monitoring the situation.

And no, I don't trust the people at the WHO any further than I can spit, but that doesn't mean they are all a bunch of humanicidal maniacs either.

Well that makes a lot of sense, still wondering about the mortality rate.
Why so many different strains of flu viruses coming out of Asia over the last decade or so, live animal trade?

CDC refuses to test patients unless they have traveled to China or were in contact with a confirmed case! Only 400-something individuals have been tested in the US.

Absolute insanity!

Does the virus spread through perspiration?
I did a Google search, but didn't come up with an answer.
We hear that it spreads through urine and feces, I just wonder if a persons sweat contains the virus.

Perfect conditions.

A lot of people, a lot of animals (wild, domestic, you name it) all packed in on top of each other with questionable sanitation in an environment that's questionable at best in terms of environmental quality.

Is it coincidental that Trump is in India at a time American businesses are reconsidering their economic dependency on Chinese production?

What if there is no such thing as a C? What if the US Deep Gov / PTB deliberately dropped a strain in China and one in Iran and one in Italy. But they would never do that would they!!!

I think it almost looks staged.. if you're giving a press conference in the middle of the biggest global health threat in years, why would you stand up there and start mopping your brow? You'd try really hard to contain yourself. Maybe he staged the brow mopping so they could say he has it, then he can recover quickly and be super healthy and give the people of Iran hope?!

Exactly... he look like a bad actor!!!

Iranian government is using CV to their advantage to quell nationwide protests.
This is the same regime that lied about downing the Ukrainian plane.

I would also suggest that some...if not all of the CV deaths reported in Iran are either staged or political assassinations.

Coronavirus: secretive South Korean church linked to outbreak held meetings in Wuhan until December

Around 200 members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus continued to meet in the Chinese city after rumours of a mysterious new virus started to spread but ‘no one took it seriously’ at first

“Rumours about a virus began to circulate in November but no one took them seriously,”....

First, I thought they did test people who have the (flu-like) symptoms, but only after they yesy negative for any of the known flu's?

But, again... you are looking at this backwards.

Our first and foremost goal should be to get real, actual, trustworthy numbers on the numbers of people who, having the virus, actually get symptoms, and of those, develop serious symptoms, and of those, develop serious enough symptoms to require hospitalization for treatment, and of those, how many die.

If those numbers are really high, then and only then should we be freaking out about testing everybody.

If those numbers are really low, then we should only be concerned with taking care of those who do exhibit serious symptoms.

In the meantime, I'd seriously like to see the billions of dollars of our (taxpayers) money being used to develop simple, in-home testing kits for not only CV, but other things like InfluenzaA/B and other diseases. Why are these not available now? It is 2020 for goodness sake, let's get with the program.

Wow, I'd actually forgotten about the protests in Iran. That is an extremely astute observation that would explain their anomalous numbers. I think your analysis is spot on, at least as far as probabilities go.

Is #COVID19 trending in your area on twiter ?

i think they removed it from the trends.

the only trend i saw was mispelled as #coronovirus last week and yesterdayi saw anorher mispelled variant . gone. they removed it.

it is impossible to have mispelled variation trending and not see the #covid19 in the trends....

Great idea, you'd better get started. How many do you think you could get round in day, door to door around the world? You've got 7 billion people to test, but don't worry, that numbers going down every day.

Sarcasm aside, the numbers have only ever been a guide, it's not a magic detector machine, you'd have to get 7 billion reliable test kits all used properly and processed properly with no false results. I saw $3,000 as a per test price earlier in the thread, so $3,000 times 7 billion.... cash or credit, sir?

I had a hospital appointment this morning, I've got to say the amount of people walking straight past the hand sanitisers despite flu and coronavirus signage everywhere was shocking.

I live with constant pain due to an autoimmune disease. I throughly cleaned both hands and my crutch I use to walk with only to have some ignorant POS caugh directly in my face as he walked past me. I lost my s#it right there and then with him. Honestly what the hell is wrong with some people.
