There's already been an improved variant. The original J-20s were using the Russian engines. These were prototype birds and the very last of them
had the WS-10s.
The J-20As are the ones actually in current production. It's an LRIP and there are varying estimates on how many have been built ranging from 30 to
as much as 60. These are using the WS-10. They may get an engine upgrade shortly with the WS-10B, which has increased thrust. The A model will
continue to be made until the WS-15 is ready, the new and improved engine.
Once its ready, speculated to be around 2025, they will introduce other improvements for the J-20 and roll the J-20B model out. Supposedly, there
will be thrust vectoring involved then.
These are based off of official and semi official or perhaps official leaker might be better (big shrimp, as they are called) sources on the sino
internet. China signals a lot. You just have to - sometimes literally - read the language.
