However, if there was an active attempt to reach out to Trump campaign members, it shed new light on why Popadopalous, in a drunken state, may
have been talking about it in June.
I don't think so. This was a pretty big deal for Papadopoulos. From what I've gathered, the timeline is this:
March 14, 2016 - Papadopoulos meets Misfud for the first time in Rome. Both men were living in London at the time. Papadopoulos tells Misfud that he's
expecting to become a Trump FP advisor based on earlier conversations with the campaign. Misfud tells him that he's got these high level connections
to Russia.
March 21, 2016 - Papadopoulos is officially named as a part of the FP advisory committee.
March 24, 2016 - Back in London, the men meet again. Misfud brings along a "very attractive" 30 year-old Russian woman, "Olga Vinogradova"/Olga
Polonskaya. Papadopoulos says Misfud introduced her as Putin's niece. (he denied that to the media) Whatever the case, there are email exchanges in
which Olga tells GP that she can arrange meetings with top level Russian officials. The pair also told Papadopoulos that they would introduce him to
the Russian ambassador to the UK. (which never happened)
Papadopoulos emails Clovis et al about the meetings.
March 31, 2016 - Papadopoulos goes to DC and attends the campaign meeting where he announces that he's got connections that can be used to setup these
high level meetings.
April 10-11, 2016 - On these and other dates, emails were exchanged by the trio. Have you read the statement of offense for GP? It's got excerpts of
emails:
b. On or about April 10, 2016, defendant PAPADOPOULOS emailed the Female Russian Nation, who responded the next day, on or about April 11, 2016,
that she "would be very pleased to support your initiatives between our two countries." Defendant PAPADOPOULOS then asked the Female Russian National,
in an email cc'ing the Professor, about setting up "a potential foreign policy trip to Russia."
c. The Professor responded to defendant PAPADOPOULOS's email later that day, on or about April 11, 2016: "This is alrady been agreed. I am flying to
Moscow on the 18th for a Valdai meeting, plus other meetings at the Duma." The Duma is a Russian government legislative assembly.
d. The Female Russian National responded: "I have already alerted my personal links to our conversation and your request.... As mentioned we are all
very excited by the possibility of a good relationship with Mr. Trump. The Russian Federation would love to welcome him once his candiature would be
officially announced."
11. On or about April 18, 2016, the Professor introduced defendant PAPADOPOULOS over email to an individual in Moscow (the "Russian MFA Connection")
who told defendant PAPADOPOULOS he had connections to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ("MFA"). The MFA is the executive entity in Russia
responsible for Russian foreign relations. Over the next several weeks, defendant PAPADOPOULOS and the Russian MFA Connection had multiple
conversations over Skype and email about setting "the groundwork" for a "potential" meeting between the Campaign and Russian government
officials.
All of the detail is deliberately left out by people trying to diminish the significance of the events. To hear many Trump supporters in the media
talk, GP ran into a some random who said he heard a rumor, got drunk a month or two later and said something inconsequential and all been used as an
excuse to spy on Trump.
This was a months long, ongoing thing. Anyway, GP emails Clovis et al to keep them abreast of this.
April 26, 2016 - Misfud is back from Russia and he and GP meet for breakfast at a hotel in London. It was at this meeting that Misfud tells him that
"they have dirt on her" "the Russians had emails of Clinton" "thousands of emails".
The communications continued (with Misfud, the "MFA Connection" etc):
May 13, 2016 - In one of the emails from Misfud, he states, "We will continue to liaise through you with the Russian counterparts in terms of what is
needed for a high level meeting of Mr. Trump with the Russian Federation."
May 14 & 21, 2016 - He's emailing Clovis and others about all this and including some of the emails he gotten from the "MFA connection"
This continues like this well into June, July and finally in August we have Clovis telling him that he would "would encourage" Papadopoulos to "make
the trip, if feasible."
Now mind you, it was in MAY, in the heat of all this that Papadopoulos encounters Downer at this London bar and brings up the Misfud claim.
I think if you're being objective, you'll see that it's not really plausible that he was talking about this other thing with Caputo that he almost
certainly wouldn't even have known about. You should also see how well developed this whole thing was. This wasn't a single meeting or two meetings in
which GP picked up some rumor. There's a whole thing going on here which to me looks like Russian intel working GP.
You would think that Mueller would be keen to follow this up... it could have been a Russian posing as US Intel, or it could have actually been
US Intel.
The real question is why Mueller is not interested.
Not sure why you're concluding that this hasn't been followed up on, let alone that it was because of a lack of interest. Caputo has been interviewed
by the Mueller team and I'm sure that named names then and that they've followed up.
What people don't seem to keep in mind is that the Mueller team is very radio silent. Like I've reminded people re the Cohen influence peddling — it
wasn't until six months after they'd interviewed these banks and only after the SAR was leaked by the FinCEN agent, that any of that came to the
public attention.
The main ways we find out something is happening is because somebody gets called in for an interview and tells people (that's how I know Caputo was
interviewed), gets stopped at an airport, through indictments/court actions. Assuming that Caputo told them what he said to Cavuto, I assume they
looked into it.
