Dear OP.
I think you're confusing some elements in your post there, but it's understandable.
Religion is one thing, its practices are a bit of a different thing, and what people do is yet another story.
If you look at most teachings of most religions, you'll see they ultimately preach peace, love and respect between humans, between genders, and even
towards the animals or nature. Is there something bad there? not as far as i know.
what people do IN THE name of their religion is what worries you, i believe, as it worries me. Religions somehow birthed these radicals that think
that whatever they believe in MUST be the absolute truth and everyone who doesnt share their beliefs is wrong and should either change their views on
the spot or die.
also saying stuff like "if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night, she's a bad follower of her religion" or "if you [don't] eat (insert food
name here) it means you're a bad worshiper" is something that doesn't really have a connection to religion. :/
i too think that circumcision, certain hairstyles, or various other practices have no place in the context of religion. extremists also have nothing
in common with religion..
however, i do think we need religion or a set of beliefs that makes us and the world better, more than ever before. we have too many wars going on,
too much poverty, pornography [i personally don't like to turn on the TV and see naked women simulating sex in music videos], and overall hate going
on.
i hope my post managed to shed some light on the topic, at least for those lurking. [and if i repeated what other said, sorry, i had no time to read
the whole thread].
