strange the US is staying mum on this... could it be because its not a smaller, less capable country, i. e. someone their own size..

Crazy anyone wants to pick fights in this era.

Utterly insane actually.

You are right, this is beyond who's got the bigger stick, these idiots with their nuke toys might actually kill us all.

I live about halfway between London and France, in the Channel Islands.

I often worry that if something catastrophic should happen I'd have no way of evacuating my family to a safe place in good time.

Having said that, where is truly safe these days?

For all we know the u.s. might have a 100 Warhead missile. Or a weapon is orbit that can lay waste to an entire country at the push of a button.

You may be hitting on the truth there. The Space Defensive Initiative was aka Star Wars was a direct effort to weaponize space out to and including the Moon even though it was totally counter the space treaty most of the world's nations signed in the early 1960s. But who else has muscle to guard the free world? No major world wars in over half a century is worth noting.

Perhaps the question (that noone seems to be asking...) is "Why is Russia (seemingly) sabre rattling all of the sudden?" We apparently know their capabilities, as they do ours. Why this sudden "flamboyant display of military power"?

No offense to OP, but why would Putin target Western Europe? Right outside his back yard?

This thing can potentially fly over 6,000 miles...the USA mainland is in the target range...

just a thought...

And then something like this happens

Strange that there isn't any thread about that on ATS yet

My first thoughts besides WOW it made for some stunning pictures!
Was the US really shouldn't be doing anymore saber rattling with NK, but Russia shares a border with them, hmmmm?
Plus we're not really in a position to be telling anyone NOT to test their toys cause we do the same thing.

I believe Russia just made our point for us with NK.
That'll teach Kim Jong Il to leave Putin out of his little smack-talk tirades.

Indeed it could be that the "show" was for NK...but what if it wasn't?? As you say, Russia shares a border...but so does China...

It's called modernization. We're doing it too. The existing nuclear weapons are out of date, and like and weapon, the counters to it are improving. The RS-28 is arguably the most advanced ICBM ever fielded by anyone in the world.

Zaphod58, understood. If "we're doing it too" then why isn't (or hasn't been as of yet) there any rebuttal to "The RS-28 is arguably the most advanced ICBM ever fielded by anyone in the world."?

Does the US not show ever it's prowess as well? Can we??

Nukes are stupid weapons that serve no other purpose than to hold our entire race to ransom.

Fact of the matter is that if one of these Satan II missiles were ever used to target the U.K the retaliatory strike would initiate full-blown nuclear conflict around the globe. Ultimately leading to the demise of 90% of our race, nevermind the complete and utter destruction of our infostructure, agriculture, power-grids and systems of government.

Then there is the nuclear winter to consider and the possible mini ice age that would also come with such an exchange of weaponry.

No point is setting back humanity for the next 10,000 years, and the people who own and wield such power are well aware that nuclear war would not generate any profit or spoils of war.

Because as with a lot of things involving Russia, we went a different way with our modernization until we could get the budget to replace our ICBMs. We're just starting on that phase of our modernization, and have been developing what is essentially a JDAM guidance kit for the B61 tactical nuclear weapons in our inventory. That gives them a CEP that's in the single digits, and allows for fewer weapons to be required.

Meanwhile Boeing and Northrop have been awarded the first phase of technology maturation for a new ICBM to replace the Minuteman.

We fire three to five missiles a year testing everything from the ability to launch them from an airborne command post (E-6B or E-4B) to their accuracy.

We live in a sick world when government leaders continue to beat their chests and spend trillions of dollars on weapons that can easily wipe out humanity. By now, you would think world leaders would come to their senses and realize we all need to get along and wars are no longer a viable way to settle our differences.

Wars however are an extremely viable means of generating profit.

So don't get your hopes up as to our race coming to an epiphany regarding peace any time soon.

Fact of the matter is that wars serve "there" purpose and agenda so they keep on spoon feeding our respective societies conflicts so as to shape our view and opinions.

I agree. However, the last thing these power hungry, chest beating world leaders want is for the people of the world to unite, and every soldier lay down their weapons and demand the end to their threats, wars, conflicts, and enslavement of the earths population. There's something extremely evil when governments around the world continue to spend billions and trillions of dollars on weapons that can extinguish all life on this planet. What's sad it's only a small minority who are deciding and threatening the worlds fate.

Those billions and trillions of dollars and pounds could have ended world poverty by now, allowed us to devise a means to colonize low Earth orbit, build a moon base and be well on our way to the eventual colonization of Mars the rest of our solar system.

Thing is though if everyone was equal and had the same rights as the rest, had access to clean water sources, food, medical aid and education then there would be no reason to goto war in the first place.

One of the reasons for nuclear weaponry, drones, and automation of our military hardware is simply down to the fact that if "They" were to attempt to initiate a conventional 3rd World War, nobody in their right mind or with the sense that God gave them between there ears would bother to turn up.

Which is why "They" are now waging religious intolerant proxy conflicts amongst the poor middle eastern nations of our Earth. Fact is they are about the last of the poor uneducated idiots willing to fight.

Yes and the Russians might have Chronospheres equipped with neutral particle beam weapons and weaponized Scalar interferometers.

I imagine if space had been sustainably weaponized by the superpowers we would know about it in the information age in which we live and/or the other sides would have devised a means of defense or have the same or similar capability at there disposal.
