Abe Vigoda, best known for his role in “The Godfather,” died on Tuesday

He was 94, and less than a month shy of his 95th birthday.

Carol Vigoda Fuchs said he died in his sleep at her Woodland Park, N.J. home.

RIP, Mr. Vigoda.

NEW YORK — Character Abe Vigoda, whose leathery, sunken-eyed face made him ideal for playing the over-the-hill detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series "Barney Miller" and the doomed Mafia soldier in "The Godfather," died Tuesday at age 94.

Vigoda's daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, told The Associated Press that Vigoda died Tuesday morning in his sleep at Fuchs' home in Woodland Park, New Jersey. The cause of death was old age. "This man was never sick," Fuchs said.

Abe played a great mobster. He also was in Sugar Hill with Wesley Snipes.

Now that's strange, because he appeared in my Facebook feed yesterday, announcing that he was very much alive and would like to let us all now. In fact it was a satirical page that I have never signed up to, so it was more a page I might be interested in.

That is all a bit spooky.

FIIIIIIISSSSSSHHHHHHHH! No!

Man, it sucks as the cultural linchpins drop around you, but 94 is better than most get, so safe journeys ol' long face.

My brush with Vigoda fame came from a friend who almost ran him over in NYC and got the famous dour look...

Sad news but not really unexpected. His character was one of my favorites on Barny Miller. I swear, he looked old even then.
