The only way to turn this around is having men on the ground. Working beside the sovereign nation's military. Supporting them and restoring order. One of the reasons Iraq went tits up was the fact there was no functioning government or infrastructure behind the British and American efforts. Nothing to back it up. Russia has Assad and has a government. They have something to work with. It should be up to Syria if he stays not us. And by Syria I don't mean rebels armed by the west.

Russian military forces start airstrikes in Syria - Ministry of Defense

In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, warplanes of the Russian Air Space Forces today [Wednesday] have started an aerial operation, involving pinpoint strikes on ground targets of Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] terrorists in Syria

Said the spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov.

The Russia airstrikes are targeting military equipment, communication centers, vehicles, arms and fuel depots, belonging to IS terrorists,

Woah, you're telling me you can do this much in only an hour? I wonder what the west has been aiming at then.

Damn, looks like air attacks have an impact when you actually want them to have.

Even the 'turn the other cheek' guys are backing the move :

‘War on terror is sacred’: Orthodox Church praises Putin decision on Syria airstrikes

A senior cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church has said his church fully supports Moscow’s plan to render military aid to the Syrian government. He added representatives of other major religions would throw their weight behind the anti-terrorist effort.

We have an inter-religious council in Russia and I can say with confidence – the coming statement of this body that unites Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists will support our state’s decision. The decision with which our state again assumes a special role in the Middle East and in particular in Syria,” Vsevolod Chaplin told reporters on Wednesday.

He also noted the decision not only fully complied with the norms of international law, but also mirrored the views of most Russian people.

“The active position of our country has always been connected with protection of the weak and oppressed, like the Middle East Christians who are now experiencing a real genocide. Russia’s role has always been in protecting peace and justice for all Mideast peoples.”

He stressed the main objective behind the operation in Syria was not in fulfilling some political or economic ambitions but in protecting the weak. “Terrorism is immoral and we need to protect those who are being driven from their lands by war,” Chaplin noted.

He also emphasized that terrorism was the most significant threat humanity is currently facing. “Whatever they are trying to justify terrorism with, it cannot be justified. Thus, any fight against terrorism is moral, we can even call it a holy fight,” Chaplin told reporters.

Exactly

The USA has done the most amazing things for the world, saved us from Nazism and Communism. Bought liberty to the oppressed. But things don't work the same in the Arab world as they do in the white mans world. Time to leave the strong man in place, let Syria survive as a ntion with a functioning government and put to death as many terrorists as feasibly possible. USA should back out and let the sovereign nation of Syria choose who to turn to to help it beat foreign funded terrorists. Time to clear off.

The USA is hated around the world for the mess it is causing in shoring up the Middle East, time to pull out of Syria, let the locals sort things out and kill off global jihad before it spreads to Europe and Moscow. Work for a better world and not Jewish, Saudi and black gold business interests.

ISIS militants in Iraq, Syria have WMD components, Lavrov warns UN Security Council

In the vast areas of Iraq and Syria, Islamic State has actually created an extremist quasi-state, which commands an efficient repressive apparatus, stable sources of income, well-equipped army and elements of weapons of mass destruction,

Lavrov said on Wednesday at the UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York.

Does anyone knows if the Russians issued a similar warning to the Frenchs ?

First French air strike in Syria 'kills 30 jihadists'

"The French air strike (on Sunday) on an IS training camp in eastern Syria killed at least 30 Isis fighters including 12 from the 'Cubs of the Caliphate,'" said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Isis calls its child soldiers "Cubs of the Caliphate".

Abdel Rahman said foreign Isis fighters were also among the dead, and that he strike had wounded around 20 people.

Back home, sipping beer, watching the show.

Seriously, Belgium was part of the international coalition against ISIS, and sent 6 F-16 since 2014 for bombing operations.
We brought them back in July this year.
The current Belgian government even considered sending troops but that was before the Russians took action.

Russia are there legally as they have been asked to be there by Syria. The rest of the plane's there are technically breaking international law. They would be well advised to leave Syria.

Hahhahaaa................. Yes that's probably the best place to be
Russian and American planes zooming around on bombing raids in the same country, total madness, throw the Israelis in too who must be on red alert with Russian and Iranian military just over the Golan and this is a recipe for one very big show. Best keep your Belgian forces at home as they cold be useful there if things spiral out of control.

But see, international law does NOT apply to the superpowers. Meaning, they can do whatever the hell they want, without anyone being able to stop them. Of course, besides each other. And we have seen international law being violated too many times for it to represent any valid document.

I wonder if the latest developments will effect the proposed UK government vote to join the action , I hope our MPs decide the water is too hot to dip our toes in.

On a wider point , we live in worrying times.

I love it ever escalating chaos!

Prepare for the worst but expect nothing, that way when something good happens you will be pleasantly suprised!

Exactly, but you don't need to be a super-power, a regional one is enough.
Did the Saudis and their coalition ever bothered to get any international clearance before bombing Yemen ?

2,300+ civilians killed in 6 months: Worst coalition attacks in Yemen

The most cynical is that the Saudis now heads the UN Human right panel, will they investigate their own war-crimes such as the recent bombing of a wedding ceremony causing 135 deaths ? I seriously doubt.

OMG! SU-25s! Those are super duper fighters that can fly at Mach 200, reach altitudes of 3 million meters, and take down airplanes with a single bullet!

Yemen is Saudi Arabia's near abroad. It is no different than Russia acting in Ukraine.

I condemn them both.
