Do you really think a flag planted on the moon over 40 years ago, would still be there, and not ravaged and shredded by the solar wind?

Comments like this confuse me. On the one hand, moon hoaxers point to the "waving flag" as absolute proof of a hoax, because there's no wind on the moon. On the other, an intact flag is proof of a hoax because the flag is not tattered from the solar wind. I remember watching every moon mission live as they happened, and I remember Science Editor, Jules Bergman (yes, I was such a science nerd I remember his name) saying that the flag movement was caused by solar wind. However, take a look at the old moon walk films. You can't really call the movement of the flag "waving". It barely moves at all, and would be hard to even notice if it weren't held outstretched with an aluminum pole. I doubt that it would shred the flag which was designed for the moon's hostile environment.

What is reality.... and do you really trust Uncle Sam

Not for a minute, but I do trust my sense of logic.

I'm not saying I don't believe that men landed on the moon (I do!), but...

Why is the shadow super long in the evening and stupidly short in the morning?

Wouldn't both be the same(ish) length? Or doesn't the sun throw long shadows in the morning?

What am I missing? Massive elevation change on the left side of the pic? Wouldn't that obscure the shadow at night (evening)?

My understanding was that the flags used were cheap, nylon cloth from a 5 and dime store (or equivalent).

Not specially made to be placed on the lunar surface, just modified with a loop for a second pole across the top.

My understanding was that there was wire mesh inside the fabric of the flags, hmm, I must ty and find where I read that.

So all the hoaxers are lying liars and NASA, God Bless them, are the saints who never lie? NASA is the Lucy holding that football for you, the Charlie Browns of this argument, believing That Lucy / NASA will hold that football........................
The physics of the Saturn 5 are enough to convince Rocket Scientists there is something definitely missing....like a bona-fide payload of Astro-nots....

Remind me to seek you out for all the other answers to the meanings of things

Nobody is saying NASA is a cabal of saints, they did mess with Apollo Moon pictures, nobody doubts that, and so did others in literature with pretty pictures, it was about presentation, and who knows concealment. NASA still mucks about with pictures like the Curiosity Panoramas for the same reasons. So they mess with pictures, or nick a pen for home, that doesn't make for pretence about a Moon landing itself. There's other stuff around Apollo and before like the amount of money paid to contractors and R&D.
Then again there was probably a lot of money spent unnecessarily, but only in hindsight, like the landing simulator, (the very thing that people point at to cry Moonhoax). I think it was only used once or maybe twice, but in the unknown it had to be done and after that, it was realised that there were few issues with landing procedure, as the stuff worked, the procedures worked.
Now you want to say that the Apollo teams never even left Earth?

I think it was a rod or rods, laterally top or top and bottom to support the flags in an upright manner.

I do.

Some pictures have been prettied up for public consumption but scans of the originals are readily available.

I think I saw mention of wire mesh inside the moon flags in Andrew Smith's book 'Moondust'.

A quick google search shows a hit or too.

The Apollo 11 flag was. It is possible that some of the later flags were of other materials, perhaps for symbolic reasons. (Eg; this flag flew over Annapolis for ten years.)

Hi Phage,

You couldn't have said it any better "Some pictures have been prettied up for public consumption"

Tell me..what is the reason to "pretty pictures up for public consumption" ?

Are people not smart enough analyzing the original pictures ?

We have not been there people in 69-72..just accept it.

Yeah sure webstra, wave your fingers in the air and try your best Jedi impersonation.

I hope you 'just accept' that there are plenty of people out there who take the time to study and educate themselves in real world systems, you'll just to have to live with the fact that your viewpoint will always be a fringe one, thank feck.

This is correct. Link

Actually, the fact that our flags are still there came as a surprise to a lot of people, including myself. The assumption was that in addition to bleaching-out the colors, the Sun's UV would break-down the nylon to the point where small jiggles from thermal expansion & contraction during the day/night cycles would crumble the flags into faint lines of powder radiating from the base of each flagpole.

I even wrote an SF story to this effect, whereby the first explorer to return to Tranquility base find that, because the blast from ascent laid it out flat on the ground, it was the only flag to survive with the stars & stripes visible.

That the flags are still flying tells us something unexpected about the lunar environment.

I've always loved the detail in LROC images of the Moon . ..

LoL....you can't be serious ....google earth has better detail of your neighbor kids bike sitting in the driveway..

Because that's an aerial photo taken from an airplane, not a satellite.

A lot of people either "believe" or don't "believe", and I think this is the wrong way to approach it.

Look at the evidence, objectively. Look at the history of the times. Let your beliefs go for a few hours and really research all angles.

What you'll find is that there's a middle road: Yes we landed on the moon, but there is also a lot of fishy stuff that happened/didn't happen. The whole idea that man has never landed on the moon makes zero sense to me, as we have been able to do so for a long time.
The real question is, why has it taken so long to return? Do you really think they stopped exploring? I don't, and I don't buy it. It's been literally decades, and our black budget has only begun to bloom.

So my thoughts, bluntly: Yes we landed on the moon. Yes they may have faked some aspects / covered certain findings up. Yes it's very easy to cover findings up in a highly compartmentalized organization such as NASA.

The kepler belts! The sky is falling! It doesn't matter anymore, what matters is how we [the people] get ourselves back in space and out of the middle-east.

Um could it be a thing called funding, you know financing, dollars, Yen, euros?

Just look how long and how much money the ISS is taking?

Speaking of ISS ciuld it be that "they" have spent decades planning and building the ISS and this took the resources that would be needed to go back to the moon.

NASA's budget is now what 17 billion a year. With all their other obligations, how can they even afford to go back?

I am in no way suggesting the moon landings were a hoax. All I say is that we are gullible enough to believe in these ´quality´ images because we believe honestly that they landed. There is no reason to even publish these images if it will provoke questions. Who cares about a piece of cloth hanging intact on the moon.
