Do you mean her assistant would be less whelmed?

eta:

Whelmed is normal.

Overwhelmed: Mobo buying # at the Tom Thumb

Underwhelmed: the rest of America at the quaint observations

I do not mind the current label system, in that I understand it just fine (yes, including the ingredients section that can read like a chemist list).

For most of my life I didn't pay attention, just bought what I wanted and ate.

Then I became a Type 2 diabetic. That changed everything.

I had to see a diet specialist so that she could explain to me how to eat all over again. 20 minutes with her, and I understood life of eating a LOT better, how to read the labels on food, what to avoid, and how to know how much sugar was in my diet, as I'm only allowed certain amount per meal.

It's not rocket science (trust me, I play the Kerbal Space Program simulator...and that IS rocket science, hehehe). Anyone, if they take a few minutes to Google it, can also learn how to read food labels.

You can also Google how much sugars and fats are good for you, and bad for you.

Then you TAKE the time to go shopping for you food. Yes, we are all in a rush, but buying things that you are going to actually put inside your body should NEVER be a rush job. Take the time for the first few times, and after that, you'll know without having to check each label later.

Nothing needs to be dumbed down. People need to instead choose to be informed about what they are consuming, and knowing about it.

It's called: being a RESPONSIBLE ADULT.

Sheesh.

My daughter was type 1, a very severe case... but boy could she read labels... she would always go with me for the shopping because it was important for her to be involved in her own health, and she could pick something up and simply glance at the label and know if it was something she could have, or how much of it she could have.

I would pick something up and she would look at the label and say, that has too much sugar alcohol mom, and I would say it's for me not you, and she would say that its important for me to eat healthy too

If a child can do it, anyone can!

Dear Michelle Obama,
Are you really so dense as to believe women do not know how to shop for food? Just because you have isolated yourself from the real world does not mean the rest of us have the luxury of a staff of hundreds and an unlimited food budget. I dare you to go shop at Walmart ( you, not your staff) and stick to a budget of $125 for a week of food for a family of 4. Keep in mind you have to only buy your idea of healthy food. Just an FYI hint for you: Do not buy anything with soybean oil in it.And when you come back from shopping let us know how it went. Then maybe someone will take you seriously.

Sincerely,
US Taxpayer

dear ohioriver,
i'm 61, and have been doing the grocery shopping for the last couple of decades....and yes, there are women, as well as men, that pile crap food into their carts, while trying to keep a couple of kids from running around. I've have seen it every time I go to the store, boxes of coco puffs, fruit loops, bags of cookies, bags of candy, 12packs of coke, pastries, etc....what's wrong with you people?...is your hatred of Michelle Obama so deep that you think if she puts out a few guidelines for buying food, somehow she's insulting every woman?

What happens when the most ignorant are also the most educated?

You know she is right...

We need the Government to watch over us

We need the Government to tell us when we are sick or when we need to die

We need the government to keep us all safe in our own little bubble of protection

They can just lock us up for our own good, and feed each of us from a Government spoon

No need to work or do anything at all, just sit and watch some Government TV program and drool....

The first family can do no right, no matter what they do it's somehow all a nefarious scheme. This whole teaching people how to shop and eat thing is aimed at a very particular demographic, and they need it badly. If you're shopping and eating fresh produce and meats, then her campaign is probably not aimed at you, it probably is even a little bit insulting. But if you're amongst the urban or trailer park poor and you get your life lessons from reality shows and rap videos....you are in need of some help.

It's difficult for some of us to believe but there's a whole bunch of folks out there that think all food comes in a box and is microwaveable. People that live on gas station fare, drink soda all day instead of water, who think eating healthy means diet soda with your fast food meal. Michelle Obama's campaign is aimed at these people, not at you.

It's a little bit annoying to be clumped together with the uninformed masses and have the first lady presume to tell us how to live. But it's not personal, she's trying to reach people that are slipping through the cracks.

Thank you for this post,

I remember the good ole home cooking, I still cook like that, and my grandfather and father lived into their eighties, both smoked till the day they died, I have an aunt that is 100, her brother and sister are in their nineties, and the oldest sister died a couple years ago at 102.

Our generation is fighting against what is put in our food.

Dear jimmyx,

I spotted the flaw in your assumption. Changing the labels on the packages this woman you describe already isn't looking at because she too busy trying to control her children isn't going to make her read them anymore than she was before. Right?

Frankly, this isn't about changing labels or anything like that. This is about her stated reasons for it - we're defeated by shopping. In other words, we're too stupid to do it right. Her word usage implies that we need the government to save us and shop for us that we are incapable of doing it ourselves.

It's not the government's job to save the Fatties from killing themselves if that's what they're determined to do. That's not what my tax dollars are being sent to them for.

If you have read food labels you know that there are many names for chemicals and such in the food that you would have to research beforehand to even have a clue what it is and what effect it could have on your body.....unless you're a chemist or something.

I think that is the main crux of the problem right there. Instead of changing the labels to make them "easier to understand" how about we change the minimum food quality standards and stop allowing our "food" to contain ingredients and additives that shouldn't even be considered edible in the first place? Seriously, if it takes a chemistry degree to even understand what is in your food let alone how it will effect you.. it should have no business being called "food". I went through a phase a few years ago when I started researching what all the ingredients and additives actually were in food (and in personal products as well) and it's hugely disturbing what passes off as "food" nowadays. Ignorance really is bliss when it comes to that.

If a "food additive" requires it's own MSDS sheet, it has no business being in the food we eat. If something was created in a lab from petrochemical byproducts, it should not be anywhere near anything we ingest. Unfortunately it all comes down to money and profit margins. Why bother putting out a quality, nutritious food item when you can make it using artificial ingredients that cost you little to nothing and pump it full of MSG's to trick people's brains into thinking it's better quality and better tasting than it actually is?

No, the problem isn't that nutritional labels aren't clear and easy enough to understand.. it's that what we accept as being "food" is nothing but a pale imitation of what quality food and nutrition actually is. Most of the crap on grocery store shelves these days is little more than poison in fancy packaging where the packaging probably cost more money to make than the food itself.

If Mrs. Obama was lobbying to bring awareness of GMO on labels I would be very happy and even applaud her initiative, but if her grocery list looks like the school lunches that she pushed in the public school system I would have to say thanks Mrs. Obama but not thanks.

I disagree. Before we had all these "convenience" foods, meat, butter, eggs were what people ate. There wasn't the obesity problem there is now.

I disagree too with the addition of technological progress.

Most people Don't 'work' like our parents, and grandparents use to.

I am sure some people will think otherwise.

But technology is often overlooked in that equation.

Michelle would feel less overwhelmed in a Communist grocery store where there are is only one brand per product and only half a dozen products.

That was an awesome comment

Because it's true.

I responded to the issue of accurate labeling, there is an ad that is all over the internet from a site called keybiotics.com, I urge anyone that has time to watch it, it touches on how labeling on foods have been changed to favor those who put sugar and other things into their foods but mask them, I think what I tried to get across is that too many people trust what is on their labels, it does not matter how informed you are about the labels or how saavy you are at interpreting the data, i think the bigger issue is, how accurate is the information and is it true ? food conglomerates have control over labels and it might not be telling us the truth of the matter.

"So there you stood, alone in some aisle in a store, the clock ticking away at the precious little time remaining to complete your weekly grocery shopping, and all you could do was scratch your head, confused and bewildered, and wonder, "

how the heck did the price of corn on the cop which I used to buy a dollar a dozen get to be so high???
How can I feed my family with the little bit of money I have???
Is there another store in town with cheaper prices??

I'm sorry Michelle but it's not the sugar content that I am concerned with!!

you are reading way too much into this....she's getting crap, not because of what she said, but, because she's an Obama...eat all the crap you want, feed your kids all the sugar, colas, candy, fats..etc. that they can stuff into their fat little faces, for all I care ......I don't give a damn.....she's trying to be positive, which for the majority of right-wingers here is a 4 letter word.

Sorry Jimmy you missed the point entirely. Michelle O is saying that American moms are just too stupid to understand any of this stuff that she herself, the Princeton graduate get so easily and she wants to make sure the Nanny State helps them out.
This is exactly what Jonah Goldberg talks about in his book, "LIberal Fascism".
