[e]xn emaciated man whose boat washed up on a remote Pacific atoll this week claims he survived 16 months adrift on the Pacific, floating more than 8,000 miles from Mexico, a researcher said Friday.

The man, with long hair and beard, was discovered Thursday when his 24-foot fiberglass boat with propellerless engines floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll and he was spotted by two locals.

“His condition isn’t good, but he’s getting better,” Ola Fjeldstad, a Norwegian anthropology student doing research on Ebon, the southern most outpost of the Marshalls, told AFP by telephone.

Well this is simply amazing if true.

There's at true survivalist if you ask me. 18 months adrift and never one found?

Something short of amazing.

Amazing...I just kept imagining while I read the link how hopeless and lonely he must have felt adrift out there...nothing but water as far as he could see all around..his companion dies then its just him..sends shivers down my spine..definitely a tough individual!!
Great post!! Stuff like this gets my imagination running wild

Amazing Story.
It reminds me of the documentary Deepwater where lone men set out on their watercraft in 1969 for a race around the world.
Some did not come back and all were changed.

This guy had it much worse.

I was just going to post there is a movie/book deal in his future.

It's amazing, I'm sorry to hear about the other guy not making it. I'm not implying anything but one wonders if Cannibalism took place.

These are the types of situations where that happens. Just saying.

Thinking about it, it certainly would not surprise me. Although I'd have imagined the negative health effects would have caught up to him before 18 months. Not that I know much about that stuff, but it seems logical.

Truly amazing . How in the world could one survive not just physically ,but mentally adrift at sea for a year and a half? Has there ever been anyone else to live to tell such a story from a similar length of time?

Don't eat the bait, for God's sake. Rather starve ( yeah, I have no real experience with that one ).

Great story, OP - S/ F. Thanks.

Too bad he didn't have a volleyball to keep the conversation going.
I have a feeling it will take a while to recuperate - if that's even in the cards.
What an ordeal.

You may need to amend your heading. It says 18 months but your post and the article say 16 months.

The government airline’s only plane that can land at Ebon is currently down for maintenance and is not expected to return to service until Tuesday at the earliest, with officials considering sending a boat to pick up the castaway.

Found this near the end of the article.
I do believe I would respectfully decline that offer after being lost on one for 16 months!
Guess they never watched Gilligans Island where they got off the island and decided a fun thing to do would be to take another 3 hour tour.

How in the world did he stay hydrated surrounded by only sea water?
Is that even possible?
