Didn´t know Gimp has fractal features..
Maybe you should take a shot with apophysis 7x, there are plenty tutorials around
I followed a apophysus flower bloom tutorial with this

it was actually easy

That is very unique looking....very nice!!
Colors/design/blend really look good together

I did download apophysis -- between that and gimp's fractal feature, I'll have lots of fun playing around later on

It looks complicated!! LOL But I'm really enjoying the sample fractals that it automatically generates - plenty of creative brain-food there!

LoL i know the feeling been there too. In 7x version most plugins are allready built in, in earlier version they are missing and need to be downloaded separately and plugins folder is missing which needs to be created. There is more plugins around ( like aposhack) these needs to be unzipped in their own folder and picked up when needed to main plugins folder. Im not sure how many plugins can be installed in plugins folder i heard if there are too many you get error messages. Aposhack
FX tab is where you really get going, start a new flame ( red triangle is base texture ) and adding more triangles one by one and tweaking parameters is where you learn, in FX tab second last tab is final triangle which allows 3d to the flame.

I put "I HOPE" in smoke coming from his mouth. It was the only way I could figure to make it "look like he is breathing" those words.

Yes you and Cody are right, it looks more original with the V keep it for sure
