So yet another person that thinks we should just screw our allies, and forget Right of Free Passage, and let China claim whatever they want, even if it's another countries territory.

Really doesnt matter if the US were to turn on there allies that would just give them another reason to say how evil the United States is. As they say dont need an excuse to hate.

I don't know all the facts of this case with China/Japan...but I'm going to assume Japan is in the right based on China's aggressiveness.

The USA might be doing the right thing for a change, by backing an ally who isn't in the wrong, but it's not doing so because it wants to do the right thing. It's doing it because it's in it's interests to do so.

If the USA gave a toss about what was right and what was wrong, and gave a toss about International Laws, the world would be a much more peaceful and pleasant place to live. But it's not.
And the USA, who sees it self a the worlds police force, which involves it self in so many issues and conflicts around the world, which installs and brings down governments and dictators, which arms and allows said people to mass murder innocents, which arms and supports terrorist groups when it suits it's interests, is directly responsible.
Because as the only super power, the only true global power that this planet has ever known, the USA could do quite a lot to bring to an end many conflicts and outstanding issues..like some of it's allies which are still blatantly ignoring UN Security Council resolutions for 30+ years.

I know it hurts you Americans to hear the truth...but lets not kid our selves eh..the US Government doesn't give a sh** about International Law, or what's right or wrong. They will act in accordance with their interests, and that's all that matters. Sometimes what they do will not be in line with International Law, or may not be the right thing. But they will do it anyway because it's in their interests.

That's the bottom line.

No country gives a damn about international law when it's not in their interest. But the US has a better history of abiding by laws regarding free passage than a lot of other countries do. They also have a good track record of supporting their allies, but of course it's in their interest to support Japan. They've been one of our best friends in the region and supporting them is the best thing we can do.

thediplomat.com... old link but relevent to the matter at hand, and i had no idea tiawan and japan had any kind of defense agreement

While contingencies involving North Korea’s ballistic missiles and Russia were among the scenarios the defense ministry explored, the top three all involved a crisis in the East China Sea. The first scenario examined a war between China and Japan over the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku islands in the East China Sea. Earlier on Tuesday Japan summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo for the first time since Shinzo Abe was sworn in as prime minister to protest the continued presence of official Chinese ships in waters around the islets, which are claimed by Japan, Taiwan and China. The second scenario, meanwhile, expands on a Senkaku contingency and looks at a widening war involving PLA attempts to seize the Ishigaki and Miyako Islands west of northern Taiwan. The third, and perhaps most controversial, scenario focuses on how Japan would react to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2021, a date reportedly chosen because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). According to the scenario, the PLA would rely mostly on amphibious vehicles, special forces, ballistic missiles, and a fighter blockade to achieve its ends.

i would add the links that the article had but most of them were not in english but it is still a good read anyways
