A woman who has been employed by the McDonald’s Corporation for over 10 years says she was arrested last week after she confronted the company president at a meeting and told him she couldn’t afford to buy shoes or food for her children

She shouted out during the president of USA Mcdonald's speech at the Union League Club of Chicago

It’s really hard for me to feed my two kids and struggle day to day,” she shouted as Stratton was speaking. “Do you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25 when I’ve worked for McDonald’s for ten years?”

Then she was approached and told she was going to be arrested for interrupting and trespassing.

They just told me, you know, well, you’re being under arrest because you just interrupted, you trespassed the property. You’re just going to go to jail,”

Ok I think being arrested for this is ridiculous, what exactly is "the freedom od speech"?

They have the right to make her leave and escort her off the property, but I think arresting her is a violation of her rights

That being said if you are still making only $8.25 an hour after ten years at any job, it's your own dam fault.

If you have not become a manager or had a raise after 2 years its time to find another job.

Mcdonald's is a minimum wage job that takes 0 skills, I have seen mentally challenged people working there.

And IMO most of the employees there are overpaid.

Think about it when was the last time you went through a McDonald's drive through and they got your order right and gave you fresh food?

I can't remember the last time

www.rawstory.com...

So your experience with piss poor workers allows you to give yourself permission to stereotype all people who have that job. If so, are all blacks criminals, jews bankers, polish dumb, Irish drunks? By your reasoning, yes. Some of them probably don't deserve a raise but there are probably a bunch that do but because of people like you in power positions or just spreading the mentality that all in that position deserve what they get.

I have more respect for the people who work at McDonalds than I do the people who actually eat there.

It's amazing to me when somebody is dumb enough to eat there and then complain that the employees are dumb... what the hell?

I don't live in America so I am not too sure, but here in NZ if you work 2 jobs you get charged secondary tax which is crazy high like 30%

On top of the 20% you already get taxed on your first wage, so it's really not worth it in the end having 2 jobs.

She probably already works 40 hour weeks for peanuts and then goes home to look after her children. Where would she find the time to work a second job, If she is lucky enough to be one of the thousands of applicants that apply.

I had a nice little response written out for your OP and decided to trash it for this smaller, more direct response.

You have absolutely no clue on what you're talking about and your OP was nothing more than a kick in the gut of the people that work hard for the little bit of money they get!

Stories like this are becoming more common and many of our fellow Americans are suffering.....taking whatever work they can find for whatever it pays.

A little compasion goes a long way my friend.

I did not call them dumb or say it isn't hard work. I said it's a minimum wage job (as it should be)

You can advance at mcdees and make more money, if after 10 years you are not at least a closing or opening manager then it's your own fault

McD will shortly offer an apology because they know that this type of BS will lose them customers. I wouldn't eat that **** if they PAID ME!]

Well, I think you're wrong. The typical McDonald's is about as ignorant as they come about, almost everything. They won't read about this, they won't care if they do. Personally, I think they put Vamptonite in the "food". Idiocracy in action.

One last thing If these companies payed people a living wage others would have to pay less tax to pay for the government handouts they need to SURVIVE.
Like I said I work as a support worker for people with learning disabilities and autism I get £6.50 an hour....I get working tax credits from the government which helps but I don't like handouts and I think If my company payed me a living wage I would actually pay tax and not cost taxpayers money.
The world is fecked up when people do a moral job like mine which actually helps others and has to carry a ton of responsibilities and runs the risk of being assaulted everyday (headbutted today ) gets payed less than a guy stacking shelves at tesco.
Mini rant over carry on.

Your spot on about the tax. I pointed this out in a thread I made a while back. People like yourself work a full time job but the pay is so low you need benefits or else you'd starve. Because your pay is so low you dont pay tax. No tax means no money for the gov to be able to pay benefits!
If there's one thing we do know, it's that they are fully aware that this is a stupid way to run things, makes one wonder what there intentions are?

I thought the the wages of MacDonald's workers were set by the franchise owners?

Are you serious? McDonalds doesn't owe it's employees s&^t. Really? Any corporation that makes the sort of money that McDonalds makes on the back of it's employees should be ashamed to be only paying minimum wage. Especially if the employee has been there 10 damn years.

Do you own a McDonalds franchise by any chance? Just asking?

“I’ve been there for forty years,” Stratton replied from the podium.

Having watched the video, read the posts and looked at the situation the following can be stated:
There are many questions that are not asked and a lot of information that is not even being stated. From what I could gather the person, who was arrested, has worked for McDonalds for 10 years. 10 years is a very long time, and she is complaining that she is only being paid 8.25 an hour. Now having worked for different companies in all of my years and life, I do wonder, are things so good at the store she is working for, that not one of the managers, swing managers, or other people leave to find better employment? Was she ever, in all of her years of working for McDonalds, offered promotion? And ultimately, why has she remained in the same position for all of that time frame? Did she not think that perhaps, for all of her skills that it may be a good idea to look for employment in another company? Did she not talk and ask her manager how to get promoted?
Most employers prefer to promote from within, and usually have expectations that should be met before considering such. If an employee is not exceeding the expectations, then the chances of promotion is not likely, and if there is any disciplinary actions, it could also hamper such.
The other aspect that was only mentioned once, is that it is always amazing how people tend to look at places such as McDonalds and think that it is one giant cooperation, and fail to realize that it is a franchise. The main corporate store has nothing to do with the individual stores when it comes to running, them save to ensure that the standards are up kept, when it comes to offering and presentation. McDonalds is very specific in such, any deviation, is risky and could result in the store being taken back over and resold to a new owner. The President of McDonalds corporation has no control over employee pay at any of its stores. Not one, yet having worked for McDonalds before, and knowing people who have and do work for the local McDonalds, what they do offer to help employees have not changed.
Did she take the time to consider any of these, did she take and try for any of the help that is out there? She states she is a mother, did she not approach and seek help from the state when it comes to assistance? There is too many questions that are not being answered, and the way this is spun is kind of biased in her favor. She opened the door for people to ask these kinds of questions, and now hopefully answers will be forthcoming.

Probably been arrested for trespassing so that while very harsh is probably justifiable

but I take issue with some of the OP's comments.

That being said if you are still making only $8.25 an hour after ten years at any job, it's your own dam fault.

how?

I mean really how?

Say thats the only job you can get and you have tired getting promotion but there is always someone else who gets it and you're actually now just quite happy working like that.

Now i do agree that if you want more money there are ways of doing that, but I think its very harsh to make a comment like that with out have a full understanding of who she is.

Mcdonald's is a minimum wage job that takes 0 skills, I have seen mentally challenged people working there.

Wow!

Really?

Zero skills you say.

Communication
Customer service (quite a tricky one)
Food hygiene
Arithmetic
Operation of machines to do the job, ie. tills,
Some level of culinary skills (well kind of)

I am sure those who work in Fast food restaurants might have more they would like to add but its very disrespectful for you to say that this woman requires no skills to do her job. I am sure their are some very overqualified people who could not do her job because they dont know how to communicate effectively with customers.

And IMO most of the employees there are overpaid.

Why?

I think they get fair pay for the job they do at $8 odd a hour.

Really OP your whole commentary on this story is really quite disrespectful to those who work in MacDonalds I dont think you mean it to but its almost quite snobbish.

A job in MackyD's might not be the most challenging out there but that does not give you the right to look down on those who do work their and talk about them like idiots.

I don't think she should have let herself make 8 bucks for 10 years...
anyone who can do fast food is at least qualified for the 10 an hour jobs that are everywhere.

anyways.

does freedom of speech apply in this case? she was at a private event. and she was tress passed (adjective use).

I'm all for protecting rights, but this isn't an example of that.
nor was she arrested for what she said. she may as well have sang some show tunes, it would have had her in the same cell by evening.

Apparently that's the problem. These people seem to think those employees should set their own wages.

Hmmm.. mixed situation for me on this one. On one hand, the guy she's yelling at deserves all the sympathy of a pig in slop. He ought to get his game face on when in public and deal with the fact not everyone in the public (or on his own payroll...ouch..maybe not anymore?) likes him, his garbage food or the way his corp runs itself.

That being said.... She made her own bed as much as he has. I don't mean her wages or the job. Hell, everyone is doing whatever it takes to survive and her hourly wage is wages beyond what more people than we even want to talk about are making right now. I mean she did trespass and apparently just to start a fight she couldn't possibly win or accomplish anything with.

Umm... There are ways to show being pissed..and there are ways to spend the night in jail. She chose...poorly. I'm just afraid she probably won't have that piddly job she complained about much longer, either. Hopefully the public attention gets her another offer. Bad times to be fired in a notorious way, especially. Not wise...IMO.

Give it another ten years and insolence like this will be met with a bullet on the spot.

How DARE this peasant swine voice an unsolicited opinion to a billionaire. The damn fool was lucky she wasn't killed for daring to even make eye contact.
