Greetings. This thread is meant for the moderator and administrative staff of ATS. It is an apology of sorts I feel compelled to make, to whomever it may concern.

One of the reasons I registered with ATS was because the site rules appealed to me. I was thankful and excited that I could share my ideas, but do so far, far away from a savage, lawless land of internet forum. Then someone taught me how to use the "ALERT!" feature on member posts. Because I love this site and the rules that protect against certain kinds of undesirable posting behaviors, I took it upon myself to be acquainted with the rules and help alert infractions.

And before making an alert just now, which I have done dozens of times, I actually read this:

We encourage members to alert us to posts that might be a potential problem. However, please be aware that this feature is intended for flagrant violations of our Terms & Conditions such as trouble makers, insults, inappropriate content, and potential copyright violations. This feature is not intended to alert staff to minor issues like 1-liner or off-topic posts.

The last line struck me and I realized that most of my complaints were probably citing this posting behavior as the reason for my alert. I'm not sure why I never read it before! But now I did and all is well.

I would like to apologize to the staff for unnecessarily increasing their workload with complaints for minor rule infractions. I just felt a need to apologize, that's all. Thanks for granting me the indulgence to do so.

I think they added that line just for you.

2nd line so you don't go reporting me to the mods.

On the other hand, i have read a thread in which someone complained of the prevalence of off-topic posting on ATS, and a moderator advised using Alert.
Perhaps the compromise answer is that we should not use the feature for a single post which we deem to be off-topic, but a persistent stream of off-topics on a thread is a reasonable thing to complain about.
Maybe somebody will confirm that as a ruling.

You're fine, it's all about helping to keep the place tidy, with 5,000+ new posts a day the staff has no chance of seeing everything and we'd rather wade through a few minor alerts to be sure the bad ones are getting dealt with.

Thanks for your concern but you have nothing to apologize for.

Springer...
