Then I would like to point out Senator Robert Byrd ( Grand Wizard)_ one of the longest serving members of congress who guess what was not a republican.

When he died his party sung his praises.

Yes Republican opposites such a party of 'angels'.

Curious (actually curious) about your stances then on 2 things:

My PERSONAL stances (I don’t know or care who shares it) on these issues are:

Women in front line combat

I don’t have a problem with it under 2 conditions: 1) Those women receive the EXACT same training the men receive (co-ed SOI) and, 2) They pass the same PFT.

If they can pack the same gear then I don’t care. Otherwise….NO, because it puts lives at serious risk.

Coed showers and the like in the military.

Ridiculous!

**Edit** Sorry for going off topic on your thread, Slayer!

Which administration is that though? Clintons policys were more "socialist"than Obama's (single payer/universal healthcare), Reagan was more liberal also.
Nixon created the EPA,
I could go on. You will find socialism is no longer a word with context in America..might as well just use a made up word given how detoothed the word is.

Honest a tad bit peaved at reading some of the responses in this thread.

History lesson for those who can actually think for themselves.

Long before civilization before it's 'wisdom' in creating government,s and political parties racism has always existed.

Always been there people-- Always

People are free to play politics with it, but the fact remains it has always been a part of society

IF some are under the illusion that mankind is so 'evolved' today well truth is.

Mankind isn't.

So its the word you don't like, well when there is an administration that is pushing redistribution of wealth as hard as this one then I think the word socialism has plenty of teeth............ but hay your entitled to your opinion,..........why don't you just get to the ridicule or point, which ever your working up to.

LOL I read it and wanted to see others reactions. I love the replies thus far which make sweeping assumptions about what I think. Too telling Typical..

Not the only one day after day year after year I am constantly being told what I think.

Imma racist, and what really makes me a racist is I don't believe in throwing money at people expecting that will solve 'problems'.

That is why republicans are 'racist' in a nutshell.

I actually agree with you, neo!
Not that it matters.

Honest a tad bit peaved at reading some of the responses in this thread.

Sorry if one of (or several of) my posts peaved you.

I'm just like you - saying what I think. I don't claim to be 'right' or 'wrong' - I'm just trying to figure things out.

Not really anyone who sits there and thinks the right, and left 'switched sides' doesn't.

Both the right and left are the same as they have been for over 200 years.

Same freaking arguments during that entire time.

Caviat there when a person's politics makes them 'racist' well that's 'new'.

" Not really" what? Who "doesn't"?

No, the 'sides' have not been the same for over 200 years. History is what it is.

Things have flip-flopped.
But, oh well.
Not interested in 'taking you on.' You've already stated your position clearly, and so, we know where 'we' stand relative to one another.

I think you are confusing the party labels with political ideology. The "Republicans" that ended slaver were at the time Leftist...it was actually this act that changed everything and the Right took over the "Republican" party and the Left became "Democrats".

Really? Are you seriously trying to push this line of bs? Liberals never stop trying to take credit for what real Liberty minded Republicans did and pretend that Progressives didn't really embrace Hitler and Mussolini....

It's documented history.

There is nothing to push, it is historical fact.

It is so obvious to everyone except the American Right that there are very racist themes inside their ideology. And actually, that isn't even true...I'm sure it is obvious to them as well, they just don't want to admit it.

No, the "right" and "left" did not switch sides...they switched parties.

I really don't know how people don't understand this. After the Civil Rights movement, "Southern Democrats", who were in fact Right Wing in their ideology, abandoned the Democratic Party and moved to the Republicans.

A person's politics don't make them racist...but a racist will find one ideology more favorable to their views. In this case, racists love the "states rights" argument and they also love the idea of removing parts of the civil rights bill in the guise of "property rights" so they can re-instate "whites only" establishments.

Again, this really shouldn't be hard to see...one just has to open their eyes and be honest with themselves.

And what dear poster is, the "American Right"? Is it what you define? What the author, Perry defines? What I, neo or beezer define it as? You don't see the problem here or are you purposefully obtuse to perpetuate your deep-seeded and ingrained ideology?

You don't see how the "left" has defined the "right" and the "right" has defined the "left"; all of which are subjective to whomever and whatever the topic of discussion may be?

As to the thread as a whole (moving away speaking directly to you flobot), it amazes me that after numerous pages, posters are still on this tit-for-tat "Nuuuh you are! Are too!" squabble. Has anyone actually addressed the article in mention? I believe this is what Slayer was trying to highlight. No thought, no effort, just knee-jerk reactionaries falling back on their preconceived and programmed notions of what left/right is.

Maybe it was his speech at Moorehead College. He does not talk about his 'white side' at all.

link

"So yes, go get that law degree. But if you do, ask yourself if the only option is to defend the rich and powerful, or if you can also find time to defend the powerless," Obama declared. "Sure, go get your MBA, or start that business, we need black businesses out there. But ask yourself what broader purpose your business might serve, in putting people to work, or transforming a neighborhood."

If someone white went to MIT or CalTech and said, 'What we need is more white startups to transform your neighborhoods' he would be crucified in the media and the 'left' as we are discussing. You cannot even have a white after school club.Pretty sad huh?

The posts I've put on this thread have been replies to others and not the OP. I would like to address the issue in general, though.

Are conservatives racist by their nature? No. Not at all. People who are racist are certainly drawn to conservative principles because most of those people are either religious or southern but that only implies a correlation, not a cause. This paints an inaccurate and unfair view of conservatism as a whole.

I have called out people for being racist and sometimes the target of that racism is Obama. If there is a "race card" on ATS, it's ironically the inability to call a racist a racist when it comes to Obama. Take the "birther" folks, for example. Most of them are racist ("go back to Kenya", etc). This makes every single conservative look horrible. I've seen so many conservatives quickly point out that they are not "birthers" even when it wasn't brought up. It's that embarrassing to most of them.

The reason people unfairly connect conservatives with racism is the same reason they connect it with stupidity. It's because there are proven correlations. Study here. It's important to stress the reasons. Conservatism draws a lot of smart people and so does liberalism. The problem is that conservatism draws more dumb, scared, and racist people. The reasons are the conservative tendencies to close themselves off and not be a part of the outside world. This suits people who are prejudiced just great.

So conservatism is very attractive to "rugged individualists", "ambitious hard working folks", "constitutionalists", and all kinds of other not-so-bad people. They love the old-school style of conservatism, the reluctance to change into the bad things they see in the world, and the independence our national spirit brings. It can be easily seen why the typical racist would be attracted to that, as well.

It sucks. It's unfair. But it's obvious and nobody should expect the correlation to be ignored nor should anybody exploit it and automatically assume the average conservative is the stereotype liberals paint them to be.

Let racism be racism and conservatism be conservatism. People who assume a conservative is racist because they are conservative are a bit bigoted, themselves.

I do not believe the O was born in the United States. But not because I hate black people, but because of the evidence to support such a claim. It is my opinion and I'm entitled to have it. To label anyone racist because they think the O is actually a Kenyan is foolishness at best.

And if they say, "go back to Kenya!" It's because it's the country he was born from, not because he's black. He could be from England and they would say the same thing.

And seeing as how you are decidedly NOT a "Progressive", while I AM, it seems you have some warped ideas of what it stands for. I'm trying to stop the accusation that liberals and progressives are racist, money-grubbing commies trying to rob people of their freedoms and their wealth and their guns.
It just simply isn't true. *sigh*

Look, it might not be true for you and your friends but there is no denying the institutionalized racism committed by the left in this country. They throw the race card around better than a Vegas dealer! Every time Obama is accused of something or his failures pointed out they throw the race card! It’s as obvious as it is ridiculous. I’m sorry you can’t see it.

I agree 100% with the first part of this. Conservative ideologies attract racists because they can be used to excuse/justify their intentions. This by no means that Conservative ideology is racist in itself or that every Conservative is racist.

However, I disagree a little with your last statement that it is an inaccurate and unfair view of conservatism. And the only reason I disagree with that is because of the replies you see in this thread. Conservatives would rather defend the racists that share an ideology with them instead of calling them out and condemning them. So they have created the reputation they have themselves by sheltering and not calling out the racists in their party and by championing their causes.
