ASMR

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response

The creator of this original Facebook group and this original Research Forum made up this name to best describe a sensation that previously had no name and still has no official scientific backing, but is experience by thousands if not millions of people across the globe.

www.facebook.com...

www.asmr-research.org...

I myself have experienced this incredible sensation for as long as I can remember. Up until a couple of years ago I wondered if I was the only one. My attempts to explain the tingles were always met by blank stares. Every year or so for the past few years I would get the urge to Google phrases like Head Tingles or Brain Orgasm just to see if I could find anyone else, but to no avail until (obviously) that last time I did a blind search. A couple of years ago those few of us finally coming together were amazed that we all had that similar story to tell.

I've considered posting something on ATS about ASMR for a long time now and finally decided to do it. Maybe it helps a little that it is starting to go a little bit mainstream.

Honestly though I'm surprised I haven't already seen a post about ASMR on here already. I would be very surprised if none of you on here have experienced it yourself. There is more and more popping up in online community everyday and there are many theories floating around.

I would welcome any and all questions, experiences, theories and discussions about ASMR on this thread.

Good on you. I am fascinated by this.

It was inspired by Bob Ross, which gives it instant coolness.

Here's a clip from Dutch TV (with subtitles)

Seems like drugs for people afraid to try drugs.

If it makes people happy, whatever. I think they're freaks.

What a disgrace. Just because it's something YOU don't experience then it mustn't be real?

I have personally experienced ASMR many times, I even have a few Youtube channels I subscribe to where the uploader specialises in making ASMR videos. They help me relax to get to sleep, as I suffer insomnia. I consider them no different to relaxation or meditation tapes which have been around for decades.

Get the hell over yourself.

Hmm,is it similar to when you stand up too fast and get a rush due to your brain momentarily not getting quite enough oxygen?
It sort of sounds like that, except people get it when they hear whispering or crinkling(?)noises if I read the description right.
Can't say I get any such effects when watching the vids of the girls whispering...

I also found mention on it on "know your meme"where it is under investigation to see if its a meme apparently:
knowyourmeme.com...

All the videos seem to be of girls-is it just a thing girls experience or what?

Never heard of it before today,so please excuse the questions.
Also you may get more attention if you changed the title to something like "What is ASMR?"or similar.

Even being someone who experiences ASMR I always have such mixed feelings about this kind of publicity. Possibly because very few videos will elicit the sensation for me I can look at them from the perspective of someone who does not get ASMR and realize how crazy they seem.
I must say though I much prefer the exposure ASMR is getting in Europe than it is in the U.S. The very little exposure it is getting in the U.S. portrays it as creepy and sexual.

Thank you for sharing the video. I really like it (no tingles though).

I don't see how that is possible seeing as my first memory of it was as a preschooler sitting on someones lap as they played with my hair.

Wow. And I think you're like the two ignorant news reporters at the end of the clip. They do it all the time with alt news. They just laugh and ridicule the idea rather than try to fire a few brain cell to have an intellectual conversation about it. Ugh... damn tap dancing monkeys.

Anyway, I think this is fascinating. I've never personally had this experience, but it sure sounds intriguing. The closest thing I can compare it to is a head rush, but the descriptions of this are so different, and the triggers are obviously contrasting as a head rush is physically created while ASMR is clearly based more on emotion. Again, fascinating stuff, and a subject I definitely look forward to learning more about. Thanks!

So then you are someone who responds very well to videos? I will say that whisper videos do get me sleepy, but if they are intentional videos (by that I mean videos created for people with ASMR) they usually won't work for me.

This is one of the very few sets of videos that work for me:

No, it is more similar to the feeling you get when someone runs their fingers through your hair or when you get a spontaneous shiver except that it pulses through your head in elongated waves and can last several minutes.

Thank you for that link though. It references a lot of the original stuff that started this whole online community. I like how it speaks of the 'live', face-to-face aspect of ASMR. One thing I don't like about all these videos popping up is that it makes it seem as though it is ONLY the videos that creates this response and that the videos are the BEST way to do so. To me at least, they are only a quick-fix substitute for witnessing those kinds of details in real life.

Also, you don't think 'head orgasm' will turn enough heads?

Would you care to elaborate? You seem to be implying that you think something will/could come of this. I've heard this consideration before, but I would happily just take some real research and categorization of it.

Ha! Well, neither do I! It is just that, back in high school when I realized that my head tingles were an enigma, I had no words to adequately describe them and this was the only thing that vaguely made sense. There is nothing sexual about it though. As one poster on the Facebook forum put it, "it is about as sexual as a nap in a convent".

Ha! You're funny.
I dunno though...it would probably be nice if it was even the least bit sexual.

I have experienced this phenomena many times. Unfortunately T&C do not allow me to elaborate any further. Except to say im glad other people have experienced it.

Wow, I actually feel dumber for reading that.

Clearly you know nothing of the subjects of either addiction or ASMR.

Whisper videos are OK, I prefer the ones where they are tapping on a keyboard, or clicking a mouse, or something physical like that.

Here's a great Youtube uploader I subscribe to, you should check them out...
