Have something for you...another MYTH, that torture, violent crimes, sadism only effects the victim, WRONG...it has dire negative impact on the perpetrator as well as witnesses, complicit and indirect. As you can see from the links and cursory examination, that my questions above were mostly rhetorical in nature as it is forgone conclusion that women often get away with many crimes against men . Like the case of an 11 year old boy who was stripped naked, sexually molested, held against his will, while the three teenage girls video taped the incident and distributed it via youtube. According to the law, the state has a MANDATED responsibility to prosecute.

From what I heard of the 9/11 operator, I can't really fault her for much besides saying when the first squad car opens up, they'll send it. Sometimes people make crank 9/11 calls, so the 9/11 folks need to do their best to ascertain if the call is legit or not. She is now being prosecuted for this.

But in related matters, it now sounds like the Boston/Cambridge transit cop that was killed supposedly by the bombers was actually killed in cross-fire by trigger-happy members of Beantown's finest.

Also, some robber suspect, in hand cuffs and without shoes, managed to escape a police car and possibly run into a subway station, causing the authorities to shut down four subways for 5 hours until the caught the guy. Guess this is the new way the fuzz will be handling all loose suspects -- shutting town down until they get their man. Good times.

You're misunderstanding the sentence. The disappearance was in 2004. On can assume the two guys were arrested later, likely in 2006. I'd imagine their house would have been searched soon after their arrest. This would be true unless they had no lawyer or a very terrible lawyer who never heard of habeus corpus.

About the 911 operator and how law enforcement and the system abuse victims further.

Amanda was ecstatic, giddy and confused telling the operator I'm Amanda Berry and I've was kidnapped and they've been searching for me for ten years. The operator responds sarcastically "We already know who you are" . . Then the operator starts demanding answers like what Ariel Castro wearing and Amanda was stunned by the realization she's dealing with a careless robot and said you mean right now, I don't know, as her voice cowers fearfully.

The truth was she gave them the name of the guy, his home address and it wasn't important at all what he was wearing at that moment. What was important is taking care of the victim, not extracting information out of her that was less relevant than saving her and kindly reassuring that she'll be taken car of.

Here you have a woman who was severely victimized and LE first response is to continue that victimization in her first contact with them over the phone.

Now it is coming out that Neighbors called police about a naked woman ordered to crawl on her hands and knees into the house two years prior were ignored. It could of ended two years ago.

Nine years ago police went to the house after a child was left on the bus, but when there was no answer they never followed up again. It could of ended nine years ago.

When can we start firing inept public servants hiding behind their unions? When can 911 operators learn to both take information and treat those they deal with respectfully instead of being trained to act like uncaring ridged pricks?

I only hope that those individuals are able to make some kind of recovery. No one deserves to go through that type of horrible ordeal. Sometimes I wonder about people who harass obvious victims, why do stuff like that?. In some cases there are false allegations or a miss-perception of events that only leaves emotional ruin, but one would have to be without thought to think that is so in this case.

Every-time I go to Walmart's customer care center for something, It breaks my heart to see the missing children/person posters. The sheer number of people who go missing in our country is truly terrifying and saddening.

I wish I could say there is a lesson to learn in this, but all we can do is lend our thoughts and prayers to the victims and wish them a speedy recovery.

hmm, after reading all the replies about he 911 operator i searched for the call and have listened to it. Not what i expected at all, all sounds pretty normal to me.

The operator sounds very level headed and not rude or insensitive at all. They probably have to deal with a lot of hoaxes and have to keep a level head, He seemed to do his job just fine IMO.

What do people expect from the operator...."OMG YOUR ALIVE OMG WAIT THERE ILL SEND A CAR OVER RIGHT AWAY OMGOMG!!!"

This story just keeps getting more and more bizarre.

Most of you already know about the article that Castro's son wrote about the disappearance of Gina in 2004 and it's effects on the neighborhood from which she went missing. An in depth report about that article can be found here:

It is now being reported that one of Castro's daughters, Emily Castro, was convicted in 2008 for trying to kill her 11 month old as well as herself. She is currently in jail in Indiana.

Little Janyla survived the attack and made a full recovery, the local Journal Gazette newspaper reported.

If that isn't strange enough for you, It is now coming to light that another of Castro's daughters was Gina's best friend and actually was interviewed on the TV show America's Most Wanted during a segment highlighting Gina's disappearance. In it, she says she was the last to see Gina alive. Fox aired the segment last night and were trying to find out where the interview had taken place, if it was in fact in the very house Gina was being held in.

This last link is from the DailyMail and it goes more in depth with interviewing the son who had written the report years ago . In it, he talks about the family dynamic and how his father had different doors padlocked and no one was allowed into certain areas of the house. He also talks about his mother leaving his father due to the abuse she and the kids suffered during her marriage to Ariel. Some of the more interesting points made in the article are:

The son of Ariel Castro says it is conceivable that his father targeted his youngest kidnapping victim because she was a close friend of his daughter.

It was also revealed on Tuesday that Ariel Castro had attended vigils to pray for the safe return of the three missing women including his daughter's best friend.

In mid-April, he says, his father asked him whether he thought police would ever find Amanda Berry, who escaped the Cleveland home on Monday afternoon. When Anthony said he thought Berry was likely dead because she had been missing so long, Ariel responded: 'Really? You think so?'At that time, according to police, Berry was locked in the basement of his father's home.'The house was always locked,' remembered Anthony, who appeared visibly tired but reacted with poise throughout the interview. 'There were places we could never go. There were locks on the basement. Locks on the attic. Locks on the garage.'

The Castros' close links to the long-running investigation have also emerged. Pedro Castro told a TV crew last July that a police forensic excavation being conducted in the neighborhood for Berry's body was 'a waste of time'.

The article goes on to describe reports from neighbors who had called the police about the strange things happening around that house. One report was from a woman who had witnessed the 3 girls naked and crawling in the back yard while being held on leashes by the 3 men.

There is much that you say that I agree with in terms of what occurs in the situations and how the toll on the brain is exacted. Whereas I, too, find BDSM literature, porn and creation of "slaves" to be wholly distasteful on a very deep level, I do not find it to be the root of why men do these things. That particular industry exists because there are people whose development have been twisted already. There's a huge difference between a BDSM relationship and actual imprisonment. The source of it is, ultimately, developmental, and not acquired. The Stanford Prison Experiment, in all its shocking nature, showed us that we all have the potential capacity to become abusive in a situation where we hold absolute power over another individual. Those who do such things don't need a manual to engage in such an activity as they can see the effects of their words on the individual in a sort of feedback loop. Like I said, while I find the BDSM industry to be wholly repugnant and playing with dangerous fire, I simply do not see it as the source but a symptom of an issue.

There are some people who develop in such a way as to form a very controlling personality. Manipulation is something that they practice from childhood on. i think it may be a toxic combination of perhaps being sexually abused as a youth and having a pathologically controlling parent based on my own experience. This kind of thing can occur even in those reared in a matriarchal society. There is an unreported case of false imprisonment accompanied with sexual abuse that occurred on the Navajo reservation. These issues do exist out there despite the culture being matriarchal. They just recently developed shelters but it was far too late for some women. www.navajo-nsn.gov... pdf
That said, I do agree that the BDSM industry is as repulsive as sex trafficking. The key difference between the BDSM participants and those involved in false imprisonment/kidnapping/sexual abuse is the former is entered into consensually and has community "rules" in terms of harm and the other is non-consensual and without rules. Like I said though, regardless of the community based rules, I find the practice to be utterly disturbing at the deepest level and find it capable of acting as a "cover" for abuse. So I'm with you on that point I just disagree as to what drives this sort of thing to occur.

*One last note--I agree with the above poster that it is dangerous to point a finger at the wrong sources because it detracts from the actual sources of the issue--the cycle of abuse. BDSM is a symptom of a problem--not the source.
