One my instructors at Corry Station talked quite a bit about that exercise (or another similar one). Never had the opportunity to participate in anything like that, just saw MM-40s in their tubes on various ships. My only calim to fame was being the first EW to detect a new Iranian sub (Yunes) about 4 years ago. Snoop Tray variant which stuck out like a sore thumb. Picked it off 67 NM away from our formation coming out of the Straits of Hormuz.

if a ship did get close enough to fire at a CBG it would be dected and destroyed in a matter of moments. it might get a few missles off but none to do serious damage to a CBG

The US Navy has many ways to combat such missiles. Many of you have pointed out those: Phalanx, Ram, Sparrow,ESSM. But the big daddy is the Standard Missile 2.
They don't call them STANDARD for nothing!

The Shkval is a sub-killer, particularly if it's fitted with a tactical nuclear warhead. Some in the West consider this torpedo a "revenge weapon" because any Russian ship that launched a nuclear-tipped Shkval against a target only a few miles away would also succumb to the shock wave.
The Russian's claimed that the sinking of the sub "Kursk" had been caused by a collision with one of the foreign subs in the vicinity, this assertion was dismissed in the West. The scuttlebutt in Pentagon circles was that the sinking was precipitated by an explosion during a test of an improved version of the Shkval torpedo.
The Russians are selling the Shkval to anyone with the money to buy them. I would guess NATO has already purchased enough to backward engineer it!
Besides, If it were that good of a weapon, Why would Russians sell it instead of keeping it secret?

Stranger I see from your profile you live in Isreal and you seem so keen for the US military to get its ass whipped by the PRC. Obviously this would break the US as the world hyperpower, so would the US still be willing/able to bankroll Isreal after such a crushing defeat? Torpedos that break the sound barrier are real. They are called supercavitating torpedo. This torpedo I am talking about can travel 15 kilometers in 10 seconds. The torpedo gets its inital thrust from the sub's onboard rockets engine. The torpedo maintains its high speed by emitting a gas through nozzels in its nose. The gas envelops the torpedo, encasing it inside a bubble of water vapor. Ocean water flows around the bubble, exerting almost no drag on the torpedo, which slams into its target at or near the speed of sound. Directional control could be accomplished by vectoring like on some jet fighters. The US has not found out yet how to keep the bubble intact while turning. The US has already launched a super-cativating torpedo that has broke the sound barrier.
