I noticed your location. Have you ever heard of the Grey Man supposedly seen in the Folly Beach area? My dad saw a lot of phenomena at the Military academy there. So did my older brother as I did also. Our school was very haunted because of the history and ages.

Well this is a neat thread, but I was told that my avatar made me a porn star....yeah...that fits...

Lets see...I'm 47 years old, have three kids and am a grandfather....woot....just wait till red tube gets a film of me....off the charts...it was funny and weirdly flattering on one level, but not even close.

Thought i'd drop back in and see if someone else was willing to take a shot on what my avatar means....I'm curious to see a more serious interpretation...the joke was funny but....

Ah, yes, the Grey Man! He's one of many of the local legends we have around here.
They say that he appears along the beaches of the sea islands to warn anyone who sees him of their impending death or of an incoming and disastrous hurricane. So you, your brother, and your father have all had unexplainable paranormal/supernatural experiences in my area? Please share your experiences, I'd love to hear them!!!
Did your father attend the Citadel? Or did he go to Porter-Gaud when it was still strictly military? What school/schools did you and your brother attend? I attended Ashley Hall from kindergarten through twelfth grade, it's a wonderful old private prep academy with its fair share of ghosts as well.

Dad, brother and uncle went to the Citadel. I spent my school at Camden Military Academy about 90 miles northeast. Camden was Carlisle Military in the 1800's. We had a place at Folly Beach close to the light house that was haunted in that area. Also we had a place at Kiawah Island, at the end of that Island it is more like subdivisions but after the second gate there was an old plantation mansion down a dirt road on the bay. We would sneak out there at night. The mansion was fenced off by the historical society but we went over and spent time in master bed room upstairs. Very haunted. I could go on forever.
Best ghost visual I had was down by the old slave markets after hours, I was clubbing with my sister and was followed by a female apparition.

A little more history on the old plantation mansion, the Vanderhorst Plantation was built in the 1700's. The British did destroy some of it in 1780. I was able to go in one room still partially furnished and I guess the Historical Society had put some plastic over the walls were the Union soldiers left messages on the walls for other troops. Me and my friends spent a lot of summers out there on the bay side of the mansion and could hear a woman giggling from the upper porch.
So many encounters out there I could write a short story book. I cant remember her name but I think the Charleston banker or whatever built it for his wife and she just wont let go. She is who we think we were seeing and hearing. We would always arrive there at 3 am.

That's awesome! I'm a Charleston native...I've lived in Aiken and Greenville before for short periods of time, but I've lived in Charleston (in the Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island areas) for the majority of my life. Are you a South Carolina native as well? I know the places that you've mentioned quite well, such as the haunted lighthouse (I believe you're referring to the Morris Island lighthouse but I could be wrong), the old slave market, and the Vanderhorst Plantation. I've tried to go to just about every haunted location in the Tri-County area, LOL...a fun little hobby of mine from childhood, haha.

Arnoldus Vanderhorst (who was a Charleston mayor and a governor of South Carolina, if I remember correctly) built the plantation for his wife, Elizabeth. After it was destroyed by the British in 1780, Arnoldus and Elizabeth's son, Arnoldus II, completed rebuilding on the property in 1801 and that house is the one that is still standing today and has been fully restored. In 1881, Arnoldus IV was killed in a hunting accident and his wife Adele inherited the plantation who died in the home in 1915, passing it to her son Arnoldus V...if I had to wager on it, you were hearing the ghost of Adele Vanderhorst, who occupied the home for so many years after her husband's untimely death.

Have you ever been to the Old Charleston Jail? It is literally impossible to go there and NOT have an experience...it's a hotbed of activity. There's also some well-known railroad tracks in Summerville that have the phenomena of ghost lights occur around midnight, and a fantastic ancient little cemetery by a tiny old chapel that I stumbled across out on Edisto Island that is rife with some of the creepiest voices and presences I've ever encountered. I could rattle off a million places...I love the Lowcountry so much, and the fact that it's filled with so much paranormal activity makes me love it even more, even if the activity and energy is somewhat overwhelming to me sometimes.

I was born up north but raised in Greenville. I have family in Charleston and Goose Creek. I was supposed to go to the Citadel but ended up in Florence at Francis Marion University. I used to go to a cliff somewhere in Greenville where you could see everything but there was some weird stuff going on up there. Whatever used to visit me as a child there at home followed me later to Tennessee. All I have been told is that it is a women.

Cool.
I lived in Taylors for a while, right by Eastside High School. Was the cliff up on Paris Mountain? There's a cliff on Paris Mountain that everyone in town either goes to or has been to, everyone calls it The Towers because of the radio and television towers placed there, and you can see all of Greenville and Taylors and Greer and Traveler's Rest and Blue Ridge from it, and even all the way to Mauldin and Simpsonville and North Carolina on an exceptionally clear day...it's a very beautiful place. There's a little path that leads off to the left on the Greenville side of the mountain down to a very old, very large abandoned house that is purported to be haunted by its former female occupant...I've been there a few times, the energy within ranges from uncomfortable to malevolent, I make it back to Greenville quite often and I plan on going back to that house some time and investigating much further There is a mansion further down Paris Mountain that has been known to be home to the local Satanist/black magic/occultist coven or whatever you want to call it for several decades...suffice it today, some very nasty occult dark energy things happen up on Paris, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if something attached itself to you up there and followed you home. In fact, you wouldn't be the first to go up to The Towers and come down with more than you bargained for...it's alarmingly common for those who are sensitive to the other side to come down from the summit of Paris with something following them.

Late to the party as usual

My avatar is a pic of me, taken when I was actually writing a reply on a forum, hence the looking down, the slight smile is probably because I thought I'd come up with a really witty response...

But interested in what else it may say about me.

Well the more the merrier

You dont mind being you, your true self while some people put up filters and barriers you put your true self out there. Most people have many mask or faces, not you, Your a bubbly social individual who is comfortable with strangers and friends. Your humor is appreciated and your intelligence is overlooked ( i noticed how smart you are
) by those around you. You have the ability to diffuse a situation with your presence and have a calming effect on those that otherwise could not be calmed.

Wow, that's very accurate. You're absolutely right about being upfront about who I am, I'm not shy about showing my face and putting my name to it as well, I'm me and I'm quite proud of that.

Yes, I talk to people all of the time, in fact when my daughter was younger she would get embarrassed as I would strike up a conversation anywhere, in the supermarket, in the street etc and she would say "mum, do you have to talk to everyone"

Always the life and soul of the party, and I do see myself as a very empathic person who understands people and usually am spot on about what is bothering them and of course giving them solutions to their problems.

I'm a bit of a joker though so my smarts stay hidden

Just re-read this and have to admit that I can start a few arguments as well and sometimes annoy the heck out of people because I won't let things go...like a wee terrier dog

Paris mountain is exactly where I was talking about. This is blowing my mind! We used to go up there on the weekends. If you turned right out of East Side High school and followed that road towards Greer, I lived in Sugar Creek. Nothing could have followed me from up there, I was told by, let me just say someone, that I have a strong protective Aura.
I have an extra sense, I was born that way and can almost pick up on it by viewing a picture. I am quite older now but back in the day's I lived in Greenville, I have such wonderful memories. My best friend moved from Taylor's to Greer back in the late 80's. We all went to the Military Academy together and graduated in 89. I knew for a fact about a family of nice witches that lived on Paris mountain.
Hope not to be offensive but some of my occult interest mentioned earlier pertain to Maria Orsic and the Vril Society.

My avatar is of a strange nuclear scientist (peter sellers) that was most likely a Nazi brought to America after the war and whose left hand is still under some kind of Nazi influence that he cannot control.....

Do I need help?

I guess the main question would be what do you find interesting about the occult, and what is it that you fear about it? I see the nakedness representing an unprotected and vulnerable mind that is presented for all to see with no ability to hide any part of it.

That's amazing.

Why do you think your family suppressed your genealogy for so many years?

Because they were taught to hide it. From the moment they left Spain to Costa Rica they lived in constant fear of the burnings at the stake and inquisition tribunals. Although Costa Rica was relatively safe if someone really wanted to they could round you up and ship you off to Mexico or Peru where they had Inquisition home bases. I had many family burned at the stake in Mexico and in Spain. Once you were trained to hide it and pretend to be Catholic your following generations learned to do the same. Eventually they hid it so well that it just became part of their Catholicism and lost. I'm finding many family members who are still practicing. The time is coming that the Sephardic Anusim of Latin America is rediscovering their origins. DNA testing is a bid deal now and it leads many of them to question their identity. Even today there is a big stigma on being Jewish. It's all about the fear that it could happen again. The memories and sadness are deeply rooted for both survivors of the Inquistion and the Holocaust.

Your avatar is much like others who choose to use themselves as their avatar and not identify with something else. The difference is you just choose to do it with something you created and not a picture of yourself. This suggests that you are not comfortable with how you physically look to others, so you picked something you personally created that is beautiful to represent you.

You are strong minded but physically shy....
