So, how come the oil spills have nothing to do with a black iceberg?

Just curious..

Maybe that's why it looks black and all...

Oil is not water soluble...hence it wouldn't freeze in water as far as I know.

In case you missed it though:

...dark layers indicate the presence of rock materials derived from the base of the parent glacier.

Btw, there is also another article which touches on this topic of black iceberg HERE but in addition to the black iceberg photo, they included an unusually blue looking iceberg as well (see below):

That's not an iceberg, that's a Heisenberg.

Naw thats something only nature can 'cook up'.

edit: those blue icebergs are really amazing

Makes me wonder if that blue iceberg was where Adam Sandler got his special water in the movie waterboy. By the way did it say anywhere why its so brilliant blue. If so i missed it.

Coincedence - just two days ago I was thinking how really interesting and nice it is that when water freezes in the air it comes down a brilliant white. The chemical makeup of water somehow evolves in cold tempertures into a solid - and that solid can cover the ground and foliage reflects all colors away from it to create some of the whitest white found on the planet. And now this thead with colored icebergs which I, an innocent non-polar cap dweller, have never seen.

Where are the red ones, like that new blaring red overhang here on ATS, it hurts my eyes, unlike frozen water.

Survival Tip: You can eat all sorts of icebergs, the black ones too.

Just not the yellow ones.

Reminds me of what it looks like in town after a heavy snow. When they plow the parking lots , they shove it all into a giant snow mounds and sometimes they pick up dirt and dead grass. The snow mounds are the same color as this black iceberg.

I like this striped one. The Picture was taken by a Norwegian sailor.

It's pretty bad when your country kills segregation over the last couple of centuries and you found out the glaciers did away with it thousands of years ago.

...sorry, it had to be said.

I was going to say the exact same thing!

Cool pics, and yeah the black iceberg reminds me of filthy parking lot snow piles.
