My son has seemed to have lost touch with reality. We have talked about aliens and UFOs and now he can't seem to get motivated to do Anything. He looks at the world and working as a waste of time. He thinks that the aliens are coming so why should put forth any effort to work within a society that will crash and burn in the near future. I've tried to explain that even IF the world would change, we still have to try to get along within societies rules (work, pay for food, clothes, etc) but it doesn't seem to matter. Any suggestions?

How old is he? As he always been this apathetic, or is this something new? Has something changed in his life, like a bad relationship? Has his grades slipped?

No your son is just finding an excuse to be lazy, kids do this. I did this. Your kids know you better then anyone, they also know how to play you better than anyone.

How old is he?

OMG!
How old is your son? What did you tell him, UFO's will do all jobs for us?

I understand your kid. I have similar stances on some stuff, but not due to aliens. We dont need aliens to create chaos in our civilization, we are doing that job just fine.

Your son needs to know that no alien invasion is even remotely likely to happen. The aliens seem to visit this planet for a long time, and they would have surely invaded a long time ago, before we became this technologicaly advanced.

There will be a need for your son to have many skills when the time comes, and the changes of society will mean that either we will have socialism and things will be acceptable for most of the people, or there will be mass chaos and disparity and wars. In either case, if he means to be able to achieve his goals, whatever they are, he needs to stop abusing the information he has read as a reason not to get involved. Au contraire. If we are in for a mess, and he sees it early, he is expected to prepare and do his best to contribute the most. We have too many cinical outcasts as it is.

Tell him that.

Encourage/pursue some new hobbies with him.

Schedule entertaining activities for the two of you, or offer to send him here or there with a friend (fun social stuff around town).

Remind him that even though not everyone will be a millionaire by working hard (the game IS rigged, but that's depressing, no need to tell him that and make things harder for him, and uber success is still possible even if unlikely) everyone has to find a way to get by, and if you're doing something you don't mind or even ENJOY, life is so much better. Getting good at something takes learning/effort/practice.

An example is real computer skills. Learning real computer skills can give you an edge in life, and you can even get a related job that pays enough to put a roof over your head. And if you lose said job, you will probably be able to find another, or make some money on your own somehow.

And yeah, I'd steer clear of the UFO stuff for a while. Just because one is open-minded enough to believe in numerous possibilities in the universe, it's just as foolish/dangerous (as being closed-minded) to put so much thought into something that's just as likely not happening (aka, aliens buzzing around Earth) once it starts detracting from your well-being/quality of life.

Tell him that when the aliens get here they are going to kill all the lazy people, that should keep him motivated to stay busy

Sounds like you took it to far .. Indoctrination is still indoctrination .. No different than people saying Jebus will come back and save the christians and throw everyone else in a flaming pit to suffer for all eternity ..

Kids are very impressionable take into consideration what we teach them at a young age ..

ETA :Maybe time to start teaching him about ethics and reasoning .. It don't matter if the world will end or not on dec 21 2012 . I will have to still support my family till the end of that date and beyond it ..

Maybe you talked about this with your son, but I actually don't believe you for one minute. I think this is one of those hook threads done to attack ufology from yet a different angle.

Kids already see ufology things on youtube and facebook, and in movies, comics, books.

But there is no debunking it for your kids, when they've witnessed the crafts themselves and called the parents out to see them on occasion as well.

I'm sorry, but I don't actually believe this thread and will remain skeptical this ever happened.

This should solve the problem....

Just tell your son that if they are real, the aliens would like the people who like to learn and know how to enjoy living. It appears that aliens have been around for a long time with their flying saucers yet we hear little of them interfering with our lives or the way we structure our societies. If they would interfere it would be to straighten out the deception that is happening. Too bad they don't contact us, it would not be adviseable around here if they had antlers though, especially during deer season.

To be honest, I can't help you with this. You know your son better than I do. Think of being a kid once again and what would make you feel better. Believing in aliens and letting it interfere with your social life is different. Show him that normal in society is what we need. He is probably seeing something at home that he does not see in society.

The truth is never toxic, and you have a duty as a parent to present the truth you see to your child. What you may have been wise to do, is to ensure that you instilled in him the importance of being able to eat, as well as the importance of being able to observe reality honestly. It is obvious that like any intelligent person, your son looks upon the disease that is the human race, and sees no benifit in involving himself with it. No one reasonable could disagree with him.

Perhaps it might be an idea, now that your son is fully aware of the scale of the force ranged against him, to teach him the skills required to fight against the encroaching darkness, those being hard work, careful and sensible trading, who to do business with, who to give business to, who to allow to take his money, and who to keep it out of the hands of.

You have shown your son the enemy. Now show him his shield, with which to defend himself, and show him his sword, so that he might smite his foes right and left when called to do so. Prepare him for the real world. There is still time after all. And do not loose hope, because although your son has learned apathy right now, he, like all of us, will keep learning until the day he passes from this world. Allow your teaching of this child to enter into a new, more pro-active realm. First the problem, next the solution!

I think that your son is avoiding work because he can.

First, address the "Alien" issue. Most likely aliens will not come and take over the planet in his lifetime.

Second, stress to him that some of the best feelings he will ever get are the feelings he gets after working hard on a project and succeeding.

Third, sit with him if necessary and make sure that he is involved with his homework.

Fourth, whenever he tries to use the Alien excuse, tell him that it will only work after they have landed your have taken over the planet.

Ohhh My God...

That is 100% a rat on mars. Nothing will change your mind.
That was 100% a government mass killing, and that boy was innocent. Nothing will change your mind.
The ptb are sending messages to the populace via movies. We should RAAAGE. Nothing will change your mind.

But the OP is lying, there is no way they are telling the truth and nothing is likely to change your mind.

The furthest thing from skeptical is what you openly admit to be.

You're an adult and you believe in aliens enough to discuss it with your kid?

Aliens exist, but do they or have they ever visited Earth? Probably not.

Since you never came back to answer how old your kid was, this is probably a throwaway thread huh?

UFOology discredits itself in it's lack of evidence, hinging on a big government large enough to hide it all, and stupidity of people. By now, with billions of cameras all over the world in phones, and many countries with no real government, and civilian work in space, someone would know by now.

I am sorry, you need not believe in every conspiracy that crosses your eyeballs.

Maybe your son is feeling something coming without being able to express it.

First, ask him to join ATS. Quite a lot of nut jobs like him in here, so he'll feel welcome!

Second, sounds like religious indoctrination from you if he just consider it fact without asking questions. Yuck.
