McAfee arrested in Guatemala

edition.cnn.com

Guatemala City (CNN) -- Four poisoned dogs. A dead neighbor. A millionaire on the run.

Come Thursday, deportation may be the latest twist to the saga of software mogul John McAfee.

McAfee , who was on the run for weeks to evade questioning in his neighbor's death, was detained in Guatemala on Wednesday after entering the country illegally, officials there said.

Well there you have it folks, 1 neighbor dead, 4 poisoned dogs and a whole heap of questions....

I have been following this on the side, hes been on the run for a while but this story caught my attention big time, everything is still vague as the news is still fresh.

I never thought to wake up and see this, McAfee the famous anti virus software maker seemingly involved in some kind of murder, in Guatemala?

Such a weird story in general...

Thoughts ATS?

The news said he was a billionaire, not a millionaire, I guess you could say that's a HUGE difference! source authenticity anyone?

This is an interesting story, I thought about posting a thread about it yesterday before he was detained.

On CNN they reported that McAfee was a bit delusional, and wearing a "disguise" which did very little to conceal his identity. Some thought that his fleeing was a part of a publicity stunt.

I'd like to find out if he had something to do with that murder, though. Certainly a possibility and there was bad blood between the two.

He sold his stake in the software company for 100 million. Then he bet a large portion of his wealth on Lehman Bros before the crash. He was reduced to about 20 million and sold a lot of his properties under valued so he could pick up and relocate to Belize.

I don't think he was ever a billionaire. Although Macafee the company, is a billion dollar company, that's probably why people are getting confused.

I was going off the top of my head, this source confirms it.

One source I read on this story hinted more towards him feeling like this is "protected" custody from Belize authorities, rather than being arrested for extradition to Belize.

Just saw that part.. No, hes wanted for murdering a fellow ex pat in Belize, so he snuck into Guatemala to escape Belize authorities.
Guatemala is one of the most corrupt countries in that Region, im sure he was able bribe them for asylum.

I actually read this last night from another source but here it is on Fox

Earlier on Wednesday, McAfee said he had formally requested asylum in Guatemala after entering the country from Belize, where he says he fears for his safety because he has sensitive information about official corruption and refused to donate to local politicians. Read more: latino.foxnews.com...

Some interesting story. I'm always changing my mind as to what is actually happening.
I got to believe that he was doing some good in that community. He said that he wanted to help the locals out but if he gave the gov millions only a small percentage of that will do any good. They didn't like that. They came after him, poisoned his neighbors dog and then set him up for his neighbors murder. corrupt third world Gov setting up a rich American who just wants to help the people. I believe it.

I recommend reading his personal blog www.whoismcafee.com...

My lawyer just brought a judge to the jail and the judge issued a stay order until a higher judge can review the case. This effectively stops Immigration from returning me to the Belize border. So….. the urgency is eased a bit.

Absolutely strange. I didn't hear of this until this post, so thanks OP. Either he's guilty and in hiding - or someone is framing him? This sounds like the making of a movie script.

They were his dogs, not the guy next door.

The guy next door had complained about the dogs being dangerous and barking a lot. One day the dogs were sick and Mcafee claimed they were poisoned, so he shot them in the head and they think he blamed the guy who complained.

Mcafee has become increasingly paranoid over the last few years and always travelled with armed security guards and himself was often see to be carrying a gun.

His compound in Belize was set up as a quasi ashram sex slave den. He had no less than 7 live in girlfriends and local taxi drivers had a profitable sideline running young women up to the compound at $150 a pop. He was trying to make his own version of female viagra and talked often about his use of recreational drugs. This is why the local police thought he was running a meth lab. In areas like that large amounts of chemicals and lab equipment coming into the country raise suspicions. Neighbors reported that men with assault rifles were seen patrolling the public beach in front of his house.

The more drugs he did the more paranoid he became, his neighbors said that when he first moved there he was very nice and open but that over the years his behavior and statements got more and more bizarre.

I've been following this story since before the neighbor was shot, and if I was a local cop I'd be looking very hard at Mcafee.

Thanks for the added info. Sure adds more to the story. Drugs can really mess a person up in bad bad ways. He sure is brazen to be posting on his blog every day.

I had a psycho living next to me for about a year. Her dog barked all the time. ALL the time. She would leave for a weekend and not bother checking in on him. Finally, called the bylaw office on her - she somehow found out my name and came knocking and screaming at my door one day. The building finally evicted her after several complaints were received. Things can escalate pretty quickly when one has a bad neighbour. And if McAfee, was high or had guns on him, then it certainly is believable that he could have snapped and killed his neighbour.

Poor dogs though - they didn't deserve to suffer like that.

Vice was posting videos because they were supposed to be covering a number of days with him, on the run in Belize/Guatemala. What's ironic is that McAfee was caught because the Vice journalist posted a photo with their iPhone with the exif data embedded. The authorities obtained the GPS & caught him that way.

Apparently he's going to be deported back to Belize, & the authorities there are claiming there's "no warrant" out for his arrest.... from his side of the story, the law there is essentially a bunch of corrupt power-hungry psychos that extort & imprison people without trial. That he's being setup probably due to the numerous times he refused the extortion of the authority. And also, that some of his friends have been jailed simply for knowing him.

It's going to be interesting seeing what happens next

He's pulling the oldest trick in the book, like mobsters on oxygen and using walkers in court but playing golf the next day or ex Nazi concentration camp guards being tried in a hospital bed.

A panic attack or drug withdrawl can look like a minor heart attack to even trained medical workers in America, in that part of the world I doubt they'd be able to tell the difference.

I listened to the entire Joe Rogan interview and Mcafee does not sound at all rational.

It was interesting that toward the end they said he was so computer smart they'd never trace him that way, but the pic of him was used to find his hiding spot from the gps location feature.
