You can barely make it on $100k these days... anywhere.

You're just as out of touch. At 55K per year between us we own a home two cars have all the modern conveniences at our house like cell phones and computers and large screen tv's. We eat well and dont buy our clothing at the thirft stores. Where are you that 100 k is poor? Pluheeese.

$55k combined income is poverty. Maybe not officially, as everything is misclassified imso, but seriously difficult. I would probably have to live on a trailer with that kind of money and not afford any insurance; car or health!

Not trying to be a wise ass but $4 gallon gasoline, $2k for car insurance, $10k for family health plan, how much for groceries, monthly car payments, monthly mortgage for house, forget any vacation, forget expensive clothes, forget eating out, breaking even is impossible!

Oh.. don't parrot his poor explanation back to us. Middle income houses make about 25 to 50 percent of the amount he gave. He is still waaay off even if he was talking about the whole household. He thinks middle income houses HAVE TWO PEOPLE MAKING 100,000 to 125,000? LOL he's so out of touch. The regular middle income family with two people that have great jobs generally make around 70,000 to 90,000 a year. That's with both working.

He is way off no matter how he meant it, but you and I both know he was talking about one person's income. No matter how much you want to defend him don't let him drag you down and make you look ignorant with him. He has had to "walk back" so many comments it's ridiculous.

You cant even get food stamps in alaska if you make more then 80,000 a year. I REALLY find that hard to believe... 250k is rich. Not bill gates rich but enough to afford a fararri (I cant spell that correctly haha) THAT is good money. You shouldn't be able to qualify for food stamps if your on that payroll, if you can then either theres something REALLY wrong with our gov assistant prog. or taxes and prices must be reallllyyyy high in cali. Id imagine that all people in San Fran that make -100,000 a year are either almost completely supported by the gov economically or theyre all homeless.

What a moron! The average middle income people earn is only like I'd say 50-100 a year tops. But after all the taxes you pay you actually only net half that.

But imagine this. Rom Knee is pulling in like 60,000 dollars a day! Look it up! So to him he thinks money just magically grows on trees. And with all his tax exemptions and high power tax attorneys he takes home all of it.

People who make a lot of money get delusional. Some of them anyway. Then they also totally forget what it's like to actually work for a living. They should put all the super rich in a sweat shop in china. Make them work like slaves 16 hrs a day just for room and board. And if they don't make there quota they don't eat. That would be a good reality tv show actually.

I'd call it Reality Check!

I'll tell you all right now that by the time Obama finish's his second term (if won) the people on welfare will be considered lower middle class. From 32 million to over 43 million on food stamps and no new industries in site - or new jobs in site. No wonder people are climbing over each others back to qualify for disability. I laugh because when I here Obama's administration say they have created 100,000 new jobs for the previous month - that is a complete BS story, and here's why.

What happened to our old jobs? You all know the answer to that and the rest of the answer is to get those jobs back from the countries we gave them to. Americans are always and still are sold out by their government - businesses were allowed to take 100% of their business to other countries without fear of a tariff tax that would make them less competitive in our country - and it goes on and on. Then put on top of that - technology and robotizing everything that can be in any industry and you have the present result of it all in one neat package.

We are all blindsided by all this BS of out of touch. You don't hear anyone in Congress saying "Let's bring those old jobs back" nope not at all. So they keep you thinking "100,00 new jobs created this month" - my ass they were. These so called "new jobs" are nothing more than call backs to fulfill inventory for awhile - period - or a government road project until it meets the end of the road. Do any you consider working at a fast food restaurant a job - maybe you can get by with that until something real comes along that will sustain your life style as it was meant to be in this country. So sharing the wealth is nothing new in my book. Our government has shared our wealth of jobs with other countries.

It isn't just Romney and Obama who are out of touch - we all are - period - while they just keep selling us out to other countries. Pretty soon a job with the arm forces will be considered upper middle class, where else will our young people go to make a living - the future will tell. God help us.

"The independents will decide the 2012 election.

They will vote against Obama.

His policies have failed. It's time to give President Mitt Romney a chance."

I'm an independent, and I can't see how anyone who pays attention could possibly vote for Romney. His RNC speech was almost surreal. It was frighteningly funny how little he actually said in all that time, and how people there were cheering him for saying it. Furthermore, what I see happening with the economy is a slow recovery, which is the most any sane person should have expected after the disaster that was the W era. On the day Obama was elected I told a right leaning family member not to worry, because he wouldn't be able to fix W's mistakes in four years and he'd be blamed for them in the end. It looks like that's close to happening, but Romney is such a weak option I think Obama will get another term.

So does that mean Obama is out of touch too for saying middle income is under $250,000?

But that isn't the point. If someone asks me if I considered myself to be middle income, I would so no. I consider myself to earn less the middle income, and I earn just a tad more the $100,000 a year. I don't believe Romney or Obama are out of touch by saying middle income is less than $250,000.

Perhaps not but they would both be a whole lot closer to the truth by saying that it is WAY less than 250K. Unless I am living is a out of touch place. ( tidewater Virginia I think not ) Most of the folks I know live quite nicely on 50-75 k and that is about average.

Then you would be wrong.

Everyone wants to believe they are middle class...But this eagerness...has led the definition to be stretched like a bungee cord — used to defend/attack/describe everything...The Drum Major Institute...places the range for middle class at individuals making between $25,000 and $100,000 a year. Ah yes, there's a group of people bound to run into each other while house-hunting.
—Dante Chinni[3]

The 25K people are not house hunting they are apartment hunting and renting not owning.

so I guess I am one of the only ones who listened to the video clip closely?

firstly Romney is talking about lowering taxes on the 200K - 250K per year incomes...

what was it Osama Bama said? "no new taxes for family's making less than 250K per year"

Obama Sama was the first to state that 250K per year was middle class during his campaign for the presidency.

I am sure someone can find that clip

How does that change what middle class income in the US is?
I get that it is anecdotal and cute but I fail to see how it changes the math in the statistics.
Little help?

Well I do it. I dont think of myself as poor. I have a lincoln town car. Bought used but still quite the luxury. True we dont go out to eat too much but I am really an excellant cook and can put out dishes that would put the resturant chains best dishes to shame and we love being in the kitchen together cooking. I raised three boys in that range. Nice to know you think I am living in poverty. I have shoes on my feet and extras in the closet. sheesh, this is so unreal.
With the price of gas we combine outings and I work within 7 miles from my home and hubby works less than one mile away.

Well what he actually said was 200,000-250,000 AND LESS! So lets make sure you include the whole quote in your post. He is saying the middle class is anything less than 250,000 dollars. This is the same number Obama believes is the middle class as he has stated he wants to raise taxes on those making more than 250,000 a year.

Who in the hell is running Mitts campaign
to allow him on TV to make such a fool of himself?

This is exactly the kind of gaff the Dembs were hoping for to show the country who Mitt really is. A rich kid
completely out of touch with the people he will presiding over.

I actually believe the GOP has thrown Mitt under the bus and are looking to 2016.

Here is the income of middle class people....

www.bargaineering.com...

Mitt was WAAAAAAYYYY off....

Well here is a hit piece that was done on Obama that says 100k or 150K to 200k and Biden says Middle class is below 150K so at least they knew who the middle class is. I had said before in this thread Obama raised the amount to 250K to appease those on the right.

Thanks SisyphusRide for sugesting I look up old videos you helped me prove my point.

I can find more videos if you guys would like but I figured if it was a negative piece done on Obama you just might watch.

Anti Obama

Here is a anti Obama article that says the same stuff.

Some sights that used to have peices showing he said middle class earn less than 200k have mysteriously been taken down just recently.
Funny those were the sights that really hated him.

I was not trying to put you down. Just saying $55 for the household is pathetically low. It does not reflect bad on you, it reflects bad on the job market and capitalism in general. $50k for one person is ok though since the expenses are much lower.

Also depends WHERE you live. $55k in alabama will get you MUCH FURTHER than $55k in the northeast or the pacific coastline.

Was gonna comment on the article but after reading some of the posts I think the country might be even worse then first thought. It's become clear that the citizens and the officials they elect have no effing clue what a dollar is worth anymore. Continue to bitch about all the problems in your world then go campout for the latest iphone, people deserve what's happening to them.

I lived in Manhattan. My monthly rent was $3000/month and my tuition was more. I had train fees, storage fees, laundry fees, and food to put on the table. If I had two children going to college, would I tell them one is permitted to go to school, and the other is not? Should they fight it out in a pit like Spartans? Should I send my wife or daughter out to prostitute herself to pay her tuition? That doesn't sound like living "Perfectly Well" to me. And what about Taxes? Does the family live on Ramen noodles, or do they drop out of college? Which fits you perfectly well?

I live in Los Angeles, with my family of 5. Combined we bring in 45k or so, and we have 2 cars, 2 of the kids are in school, and we always have food on the table. No, we dont all have an iphone, or a tv in every room. But its not the TVor iphone that provides a life, or happiness. We buy clothes on sale, and shop smart and NEVER think we have it bad. I feel lucky to be well fed and happy, another 50k a year would be nice.. But filling my life with more stuff isnt the path to happiness.

$30k per person and below is trailer park housing and a small used car. Maybe car insurance, definitely no health insurance, eat once a day, no vacation, kmart clothes, bare minimum existance.

That is why I said what I said before. There is no way I would ever marry and have children. Africans do that and the kids die from starvation.

I would rather have full blown socialism than live in a wall street dictatorship.
