World's richest woman calls for Australian workers to be paid $2 a day to compete with companies hiring cheap African staff

• Mining boss Gina Rinehart says Australian labour is becoming too costly
• Comments received criticism by PM Julia Gillard who insists cheap labour is 'not the Australian way'

The richest woman in the world warned her fellow countrymen they are becoming too expensive to employ.

‘The evidence is unarguable, Australia is indeed becoming too expensive and too uncompetitive to do export-oriented business,’ she said.

‘Furthermore, Africans want to work, and its workers are willing to work for less than $2 per day. Such statistics make me worry for this country's future.’

Will Gina Rinehart be the first to volunteer to work for $2 a week or is $2 a day only for the 'ordinary' people?

It must be tough inheriting a $1.5bn empire from your father. It's a pity she sees others in society as a commodity who should work for peanuts to make her money.

Well then ,import hundreds of thousands of African workers to go down and work in the pits for 2 dollars a day
And at the end of the week they will be able to buy 1.5 happy meals..

From what I've heard (and seen) of this woman in the past week, I can say she's despicable... People like this are what's plagued humanity throughout history. Elitist leeches with an extreme case of narcissism; love to control "regular" humans & think their financial status puts them in a position do so with no moral obligation.

Looking at her i don't think 200 dollars a day would keep her in snacks.

While she's at it why doesn't she just suggest going back to slavery it was after all better for the economy.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Coffin Cheaters put a mark on her given their affiliations with many Aussie Unions.........she won't see out the rest of the year if she keeps this crap up.

So i guess she is going to be willing to fit the bill to house and feed all these people she would be under paying. How about school there children an clothe all as well. At $2 a day not even the most thrifty of savers could survive in this day and age. Maybe she has let money shade her from the real world, but from what i understand Austrailia isn't a 3rd world country that would make $2 a day a liveable wage. So I just don't undertsand where she would find the labour daily? can you pick up workers at home depot down under?, cause with out houses to rest there head, cause your under paying em don't think you'll have much of a workable force.

So she inherits tens of millions of dollars. Takes control of a billion dollar business that her father built; currently "earns" $2 million per hour. Proceeds to say that if you're poor/not wealthy then you're a lazy drunk. And ends it by saying you should work for $2 per day....

Not to be a pest, but Gina Reinhart had a net worth of approximately $75 million when her father passed. Her, or the team her father left her, turned that into approximately $29.17 billion. Far more than inflation would cover.

She may say stupid things, but she may also be brilliant when it comes to her business'.

And, no, a drunken baboon would not have been as successful as her, many have inherited more and lost it.

Being in the right place at the right time to ride the wave of selling Australian minerals to China doesn't strike me as being brilliant when it comes to business.

Let's face it - she didn't make her money through her people skills did she?
