An example of how 'Dumbed Down' the public are by the MSM

I was watching the news with my family today, it was showing Israeli forces striking Palestinian children and arresting them.

My mother, who is against violence of any kind, shouts "how can we let this continue, how can they get away with it, it is disgusting!"

So I pointed out that we fund them to do that, they are our 'allies' in the middle east.

To which she replied- "They're not our friends they've been killing their people, it's been on the news for months". She actually pointed out that "you cannot deny that, you clearly saw him kick the child!"

At which point I realised, she thought the news story was about Syria, and not Israel/Palestine.

Realising, I ask- "So that is the first time you've seen ACTUAL video evidence of police brutality?".

She answers "Yes."

So I then pointed out that is was Israeli soldiers and nothing to do with Syria, by which time the TV had been turned over as the X Factor was on the other channel, and that is obviously more important...

...But just take some time to think about the irony of this. Over all those months of propaganda and conditioning from the MSM, this was the VERY FIRST TIME she had seen actual evidence of attacks against innocent civilians, namely children in this case. The irony being that is wasn't even Syria footage, it was Israeli soldiers!

Just wanted to share that story as for me, it highlights just how effective the MSM is with their propaganda against the general public.

In the UK the disconnect, in respect of Syria, between the propaganda fed to the public via the newspapers, the BBC and other news outlets (the FSA are freedom fighters) and what the public clearly feel (The FSA are murdering Islamic extremists - as overwhelmingly expressed in on-line newspaper comments) is so great that their is no longer any doubt in my mind that someone is controlling the media.

Things like X factor are just opium for the masses. Bread and circuses if you will.

Rome fell when the bread and circuses were being fed to the people while the government had spread itself to thin.

That is the same affair the United States, the UK and a few other places are facing.

At which point I realised, she thought the news story was about Syria, and not Israel/Palestine.

And yet, "the news", to my knowledge, did not say this.

It all reminds me of that episode of Doctor Who where they were at Satellite 5 and the media was being controlled by "The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe", an alien of some crazy design. It was shaping and manipulating all the media and all information, essentially holding the human race back.

The OP created a thread about Americans being "dumb down".

He used his mother as an example of an American being "dumbed down".

You are right though, it was not a direct insult. You only realize its existence if you read the first sentences.

maybe they just caught the kids throwing gasoline filled firebombs, or rocks and stones at civilians, or maybe a pack of them beat up an old man or woman, or maybe one of them had a gun....looks like the full story wasn't told

OP, I get what you're saying, in amongst all the other trolling happening on this thread. My spouse is the same, although we don't have telly. Newspaper is v good at disinformation too. We have very heated discussions about how MSM chops and changes certain situations to fit the bill. Nothing to do but wait for the other half to wake up in their own good time....patience is a virtue, even in these times.

Don't worry mate, your mum aint the only one... I could find about 20 million Australians who are as dumb as dog sh!t and wouldn't know anything about what is actually happening in the world today... Starting with my ex and her drama queen family and then my family also.

It really amazes me how stupid people really are. But as long as people have there US open tennis or big brother etc, they really couldn't care who the good and bad guys are.. They donated themselves to the system a long time ago and its sometimes even pointless debating with small minded idiots.

I love my family but the truth is, they can't even see what I'm trying to say most of the time... Anything against the likes of Israel or the US is a crime...

I will have to add my couple quid to that. The people of this country are for sure being distracted by the stupid box. I find it almost insulting the ignorance of the masses on a lot of the subjects we discuss here. And with it the automatic dismissive nature of those we would call intelligent, when any of these subjects are brought up.

However, I also, sometimes, wish I still was ignorant of some of the things I have learned. And have chosen to not push too hard on those that refuse to see.

how does your mother being misinformed or ignorant about what the news is talking about while you were watching it, prove the MSM is dumbing people down?
at most your mother needs to pay attention to the news more often.

ignorance or apathy doesn't constitute stupidity, though people can mistake either of them for stupidity.

Too many people believe if it isn't on the news then its not real or happening. I have some relatives that only trust what they hear from the news MSM as in fox,abc,cnn,etc etc they think that everything they say an do is the truth and they don't even entertain the idea that MSM tends to twist or distort truth etc etc...now thats real scary..So yeah nice op I definitely agree too many people have been dumbed down by MSM and the tv in general and it takes away here critical thinking abilities imo...ah gtg I don't wanna miss the nightly news LOLOL jk jk ATS is my news hahaha

This is a good example of why I rarely watch TV... and further underscores why my news comes from many different sources.

Sometimes, I will read or see a news report or article and then watch the same event on the BBC or a foreign news source and it looks like a totally different event...

And then to really befuddle things, I come to ATS and catch a completely different spin on things...

And then I talk to friends or co-workers about the events and they are totally unaware of what I am talking about, unaware of what just happened, and unaware of the ramifications.

I know people thatstill don't know about Fukishima meltdown, don't know who Ron Paul is, can't name 3 of the 10 Ammendments, that think QE2 is a boat...which it is,but in contemporary terms is financial, don't realize China and Afghanistan are neighbors...and so on. But they know who won the race and football game.

No point in sugar coating reality. The first people who rise out of the mudhole they've been dropped into at the beginning of life are the ones that realize their parents are morons.

Unless of course you came from a good family. Not so many were that lucky. The ones that weren't and questioned their parents are the ones who rose above them.

The OP is pointing out hypocrisy, the anathema to the egocentric parent.
