You all knew it was coming...now it is considered "suspicious" to NOT be on Facebook.

Facebook has become such a pervasive force in modern society that increasing numbers of employers, and even some psychologists, believe people who aren't on social networking sites are 'suspicious.'

The German magazine Der Taggspiegel went so far as to point out that accused theater shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murder Anders Behring Breivik have common ground in their lack of Facebook profiles.

There has been for a long time the idea that someone who wants to protect their privacy is a "kook" or "strange"...now we are pushing the idea that if you don't use social media you might be a psychopath. This is along the lines of those who say, "Well, if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" when it comes to the gov spying on you...

On a more tangible level, Forbes.com reports that human resources departments across the country are becoming more wary of young job candidates who don't use the site.

Want to fit in? Want to be "one" of the "in" crowd? Well you better have a facebook account - if you don't not only are you not cool - you might not get a job - oh, and dating?

Slate.com tech reporter Farhad Manjoo wrote in an advice column that young people shouldn't date anyone who isn't on Facebook.

I personally find this type of reporting to be very suspect. How conformed do they want us to be? How sad are we that if you don't publicly show the world 24/7 "who" you are you are somehow a deviant?

The tech news site Slashdot summed up Der Taggspiegel's story about social networking as 'not having a Facebook account could be the first sign that you are a mass murderer.'

Meh. I knew it was going to come to this. I hate facebook. I guess you all now know who I am and what I am about.

A lot of people are normal...good people; they just like their privacy... and don't want to make their lives nor information an open book for all to see. It's not that they have anything in particular to hide; they just want to be left alone.

Ah it must be the low oxygen up here because I agree one hundred percent.

I think we all need to feel our lives have some importance. It is a sad commentary that most of the masses see facebook and twitt as a good way to gain that recognition. The idea of gathering to share information is undeniably beneficial, that information should consist of more than what toilet paper your currently using to wipe your ass though.

Well I am on the fast track for one of them fine FEMA camps then!

I am a veteran (terrorist), where my Oathkeepers T-shirt proudly(terrorist) and now because I am not dumb enough to have a facebook account (terrorist) three strikes I'm out eh??? Not making fun of what your OP is about, just showing the tyranny that is creeping up on us........

I dont know if your post was in jest or not but it is actually true, its what the future hold for us.
Within the next decade or two, people will be chipped, the chips will probably contain all information about you, grades in school, criminal history, familial status etc..
Itll be "voluntary":at first but anyone refusing will eventually be shunned as an abnormal or suspicious but it will eventually be mandatory.
Hopefully Im long gone before then

i don't use facebook because the website installs viruses via their java and shockwave applets, not to mention all the tracking software.

One of the funniest things to me is when my wife is on her FB account and finds someone who "liked" something on a shady site, or took a survey on a shady site. You find out lots on peoples porn tastes that way.

Nope...i didn't buy a computer for social networking.

I am beginning to think the world is becoming overpopulated with idiots who take freedom for granted.

I have actually gotten off most social network sites ATS is one of the few I still participate in.

What if I have a fake facebook profile or even a hundred of them? I guess then I'd be pretty awesome then huh? (Sorry, "Brilliant" for you Brits) What about the bona fide Bots on facebook? Facebook is a joke, a trip down the ego-centric lane of make believe ego masturbation. Why willingly give away all of your personal info to the NSA? At least make them work a "little" bit for it!

I think more people are finally waking up to the fact that Facebook is a CIA operated website used to monitor the 'sheeple', and also can be used as a tool to 'OCCUPY wherever" and start riots to enforce Martial Law, "get those sheep into the FEMA camps/ pens where they belong!!"

Facebook tracks your internet usage, the sites you visit, EVEN AFTER you have logged out or signed out of Facebook.

i don't use Facebook..BECAUSE employers use it as a reference..along with government..i feel if they want to know about me its extremely rude to avoid the biggest potential source of information..myself..

i also don't tweet or text *to many employers use those to call you into work on your day off..and now you simply cant say you didn't get it because they send text and tweet receipts stating when you got it..i don't blog, in fact the only place you might find me is here..and i don't post here that often either..

i like my privacy.. i also enjoy talking with friends to see how there day was.not reading in some tweet or blog or Facebook site..its called human interaction..and that is something that has become increasingly sparse..

To me people that post there day to day lives are f'ed in the head..and need help.

For me Facebook became to be something that I thought was a waste of time and a way of inviting people into my life that I really didn't want there.

My fiancee still has one and I look at it sometimes and wonder how anyone has time to work if all they are doing is updating their status about...work.

Psychopaths have been around a lot longer than even before the invention of the internet i.e. Jack the Ripper, who if alive today would probably use FB/Twitter to post taunting clues glorifying his kills instead of sending them to the newspapers.

It is idiocy to make statements like that because it begets ignorance. It's not often I bring out the yellow fellow but in these case it warrants it.

Being obstinate by nature, this just solidifies my desire to be contrary.
Never wanted to be a social whore, never needed to have my ego stroked by the unwashed masses, never desired to share what my 'likes' are to everyone and their corporate sponsors either.

I quietly wait for the next social experiment and watch the bandwagon fill up and drive away.

If these things make me suspicious, then good luck trying to learn more about me without the online trail.

Good for you! Lets all be as obstinate as possible and as contrary as possible! Hah. So activating the facebook page last year that I just actively ignore was a good thing? Sweet.

BTW to any of my facebook friends who may also happen to be ATS members: I'm sorry I'm such a terrible FB friend. Facebook is just a terrible, intrusive company and sadly too many of you are entirely too annoying on with your constant idiotic posts and unceasing app requests. I do still love you all, just...call me sometime instead of trying to find me on FB.
