North Korea has publicly executed at least three people in recent years after they were found guilty of cannibalism, according to a think tank in South Korea.

In one case, a starving man used an axe to kill a work colleague, ate some of the flesh and sold the rest in a local market as mutton.

The most recent case occurred in 2011 in the town of Musan, a defector told the institute, while a father and his son were executed by a firing squad in the town of Doksong in 2006 after being found guilty of consuming human flesh.

In a third case, a man was executed in Hyesan in December 2009 for killing a girl and eating her. The man reportedly resorted to cannibalism after supplies to the city dwindled in the wake of the government's disastrous efforts to reform the currency triggered rampant inflation and worsened already critical food shortages.

Pyongyang has been accused of using food supplies as a weapon to cow its own people, effectively turning a blind eye to illegal markets when food is scarce but then cracking down on private sales again and limiting deliveries when supplies are more abundant.

The Telegraph

Apparently, 230 defectors to South Korea from the North state that they personally witnessed the execution of people who had either eaten or sold human flesh.

It certainly makes for good propaganda.

While I have no doubt that hunger can be widespread at times, I find it hard to believe that cannibalism is quite as widespread in the North as South Korea would like us to think.

Besides, South Korea is already winning the propaganda war without pushing the envelope.

Not all of it. Just much of it.

Don't get me wrong. I think the North Korean regime is despotic. I just find it hard to believe that cannibalism driven by hunger is quite as widespread as the defectors are claiming.

A little like the lampshades made out of human skin and soap made out of human fat that witnesses testified to at Nuremburg after WWII but which never existed.

Ritual cannibalism existed in China up until 1968.

Villages killed people who they thought were traitors to mao every month and had a dinner with them the whole village took part in.

So now North Koreans can't even eat North Korean food? What are they supposed to eat, animals and plants?
