Just stumbled upon this...

By the unanimous consent of all voting lawmakers, Argentina yesterday approved a gender rights package that will allow all adult citizens to change their sex at will — even without undergoing surgery or hormone replacement therapy.

what is "revolutionary" about it is:

However, should a person opt to make physical changes to their appearance, those treatments will be fully covered by their health care providers, whether public or private.

Time to strap on that Everlast chastity belt...

on a side note...soap sales have sky rocketed in Argentina.

I don't agree with disfiguring the body like that.

Be gay if you want, but I think you should deal with what you were given rather than disfiguring yourself. If you're a man you can never be a real woman anyway, and vice versa.

It's their body; they should be able to do as they choose with it.

Good for Argentina. Every thing I've read about this country says it's a very progressive place. Other countries could take a page from their book.

It's just my opinion, not a debate.

Although I disagree with it, if I had the power to stop people doing it, I wouldn't. It is their body and no one has the right to say "You can't do that". They own their body and can do what they see fit.

I'm not sure if this should be covered by public health care.

I want to move to Argentina. They just voted to Nationalize a major part of their Oil Industry recently.

Im not gay but you can tell by this that they value a public health system and they are progressive.

Argentina sounds awesome.

Nationalization is the way of the future.

I don't mind the law, I'm just wandering if it's right that this be covered by public health care. Unless they are hoping for a low turn out...

Some operations are necessary I guess...but wouldn't it open doors for abuse?

On public health care? Don't agree with that, public health care should focus their money on life saving treatments, such as desieses and a&e, not on cosmetics, because at the end of it all, a sex change is plastic surgery to make someone appear to be the opposite sex. They will still be a man/woman, but they would just appear to be the opposite sex.

Tax payers money should go to treating people who need the treatment to stay alive, not to people who want to alter their appearences.

I dont believe in Private Health Insurance. Its a scam. Here in Australia we had a really good public health system before it was Americanized. Now it is not good at all. And for the money you pay for private health cover its not much better for the most part. Its a rip for everyone.

I am a socialist so I think all medical should be free.

This thinking...that if something (anything, really) is legal or just available in any sense, that a bazillion people are going to jump and start doing something...is just insane.

Do people really think that just because this treatment is available through the state, that half of the population there is going to go change their sex?

It's their body, their choice.

But I still find it disgusting and won't support it.

And what about everyone elses right? I have the right to know if the person I'm dating is really a woman or male. Even with operations, a man that becomes a woman is still a man. Same with a woman that becomes a man. As long as they're open with their past, I see no problems. But I know many cases where a persons partner was actually born another sex and left that detail out of the equation.

And if you think this sound ignorant or old fashioned, then you're an idiot. (Not singling you out MzMorbid, but to whoever reads this and thinks it.)

A right isn't a right when it infringes on another persons right.

Correct, they should be able to do what they like with their body.

But health insurers shouldn't be forced to cover this sort of surgery. It's not life threatening. It's cosmetic.

Thats terrible...

not the sex *change itself
but the encourging of
people to go leach off their
system...

People complain about imigration
in america i could never feel confident
in going to another country and leeching
off them...

There is no right to know.

And their right to choose is none of your business.

To say that they must divulge whether or not the had a sex change also infringes upon their rights of privacy.

So your right to know ends.
