Yeah.. I know just what you mean. I'm almost afraid to admit it, but I actually played Pong and thought it was a pretty cool game when a was a little kid at the big family parties. err.. yeah.. kids these days would call what used to pass for high tech something worse than waterboarding for torture.

S3 Arctic Series wicked lazer.
www.wickedlasers.com...

great for getting rid of flies. when one lands on something you just zap them and they are then blind. and no longer bother you any more

it looks like the guy just mounted one of these lazers in a lookalike phaser housing. and added the sound effects

Although I appreciate the work that the person who built this phaser has done, in terms of the item looking the part, as does its beam, I would say that if he was serious about this, he would have forked out the cash for one of these...

www.wickedlasers.com...

... and therefore would have had a 1 watt output capable of far more than a bit of standard balloon popping, which would have been a much better monument to the Trek. All hail the Trek.

Good effort though.

Yeah this thing is so cool. I thought about making one a few years back but blue ray parts are so expensive. This is cool though. One day I will. The original video had instructions.

Me being a massive trekkie and all, I have to say I love the look of that.

It almost looks too good though. We got more history on the guy?

He's not going to think it's such a cool invention when the laser beam reflects off a reflective surface back into his eye, and he's blinded for life.

So not a phaser then. Not even close. Being that, according to Star Trek, a phaser is a cascaded nadion pulse - nadions being the energetic particle, replacing photons as in a laser.
Now as nadions are made up, we can say this is not a phaser.
Its nothing more than a glorified laser pointer and have been made by people, such as on instructables or makezine, for literally as long as laser pointers/diodes have been available.

FAIL!!!!

Plus it would only cause mild burns if exposed for long durations. Not a very effective weapon then! Not a weapon at all!!! Why not get 10 of these high power pointers/diodes - and link their output together with a customised collimater? That might be useable as a weapon. It doesnt need to vaporise the target to be useful.
