How did we get this (as a culture) numb and un-probing. I remember saying when I was a kid that it would be americas undoing that Jocks were considered cool, being uneducated with the attitude " I don't want to learn nothing, and that makes me cooler than you," and the people trying to learn ANYTHING other than social games was a nerd. Sadly I'm right. now nobody gives a crap about the latest advances in science (one of the very things that makes us human and separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom) but kim kardashians favorite shoes and ice cream are somehow fascinating. it's pathetic. I argue it makes us less human in some ways to be so obsessed about such trivial things like celebrities. I say humanity was better off in someways before mass consumption and mass media. back then you actually had to respect somebody for their accomplishments not their triteness. Not that mass media in the form of open education is a bad thing. I believe if harnessed correctly it could be a great educational tool like some gigantic encyclopedia where you can learn about anything you ever wanted and from multiple sources and perspectives. but sadly no. Instead it's been harnessed to dumb down just about everybody. Imagine how pathetic a species we appear to extraterrestrials. damn we even have a show called ancient aliens where the main contributor (the guy with the greek last name, big hair and fake tan) can't even pronounce the world extraterrestrial correctly. I'd pass on this planet in my galactic survey if i were them. now as a safari of stupidity tour earth would be a great destination. ever notice most of the abductions and UFO happen around the US. maybe a coincidence, maybe not. it's just the largest source of sadly missed opportunities and examples of mass idiocy around.

Young people today (and I mean anyone under 40 ) have become specialised.

They know how to "twit" or whatever it's called. They can probably reboot a computer and use a calculator.

But ask them to make change in their head and you'll be met with a blank stare.

How dare you beezer! I'm 34 and I definitely don't know how to twit! I've been called a twit a few times though...

lol, good point's beezer. I can confirm I have never used twitter (nor will I ever) I can reboot a computer (and also build and fix one) I can use a calculator and can calculate change in my head.

I have seen that Robert Heinlein quote before and I think I can do most of that stuff (write a sonnet I might have trouble with). Sadly I suspect a lot of kids these days can't. Dunno about you but I've seen late teens early 20's absolutely lost (and close to tears) without their iphone/android. Depressing sign of the times.

I didn't learn about the Titanic at school, nor did people I know who are in their 70s.
I did find out about it from TV & media back in the 1970s.
So who are you people who were taught about it & in which schools?
My school days were 1970s west London.
Why should young people know about a ship that sunk 100yrs ago?
It isn't relevant to them or their lives.
Why do the media & others keep going on about a big boat & incompetent captain that was lost at sea so long ago anyway?
Why is it so important to our history?
I'm not trying to rain on anyones parade but I so don't see why we still spend so much time this.
It sunk & wont be comming back. Get over it.
Make a new Titanic ship & lets talk about that instead.

Is that what you'd say about ww1 or ww2? 'Well, doesn't matter! it was 50+ years ago, 50 million people died and won't be coming back, Get over it!' How can you not see the value of learning history? The titanic sinking was a major thing at the time, one of the worst maritime disasters in human history, it lead to massive changes in the laws and regulations concerning ships. The reason there are more than enough lifeboats and life jackets on the modern cruise ship (you or your kids might happen to go on holiday on one day) is BECAUSE of the lessons learnt from the titanic disaster. You don't remember the past you will keep making the same mistakes.

It's been on the BBC news all day & they haven't mentioned what you said once.
As for the World wars they are very relevant to whats going on in the world today.

This doesn't surprise me at all from the Faceache and Twatter generation.Talking to a mates 14 year old son recently about my visit to the Royal Navy dockyards in Portsmouth to see the Victory and Mary Rose,I was quite surprised to find he had never heard of Admiral Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar and even when prompting him with the lucky sniper bit and the "kiss me Hardy" cliche he gave me a blank look.He's actually more intelligent than your average 14 year old and isn't part of the social networking crowd but when asked what his school history lessons taught him "Oh just war and Hitler and when the first car was made".I actually thought it strange to not include something about our most brilliant military leader ever and apart from the Battle of Britain one of the most important battles in our countries history.
At least he doesn't think Titanic was fictional,or even more absurdly was sunk by a German U boat.

Our children no longer feel compelled to study history because... well, you and I are no longer young enough to know everything!

This is 1984 - stupidity is knowledge - ignorance is truth.

Our children don't feel compelled to study much of anything except their friends' facebook pages. The smart generations are getting too old to fight, the young generations are too stupid to win. This will make depopulation SO MUCH EASIER for TPTB.

I thank God my nieces and nephews are homeschooled/private schooled.

History is mostly distorted truths that hide other agendas

I might be wrong but I believe Titanic was important as it caused a rethink on the way hulls are designed (something about the dividing wall on the hull compartments not going all the way to the ceiling?). According to wikipedia it also led to a re-write of maritime safety, the results of which are still in use today -

"The disaster was greeted with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and the regulatory and operational failures that had led to it. Public inquiries in Britain and the United States led to major improvements in maritime safety. One of their most important legacies was the establishment in 1914 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which still governs maritime safety today."

On a "useless fact of the day" side-note, my parents found out while tracing our family history that my great-grandfather was actually the owner of Whiteline, the company that built the Titanic and her sister ship.

Hah, I personally know a 18 yrz old girl that was absolutely certain that human pregnancy is 12 months long. I'll add that this girl went to normal primary and secondary school, and lives in "normal western" environment.

So you know... some people really are THAT stupid.

I call her "elephant" since. Not to her face though, wouldnt want to upset her .

Back in school there was this girl there was 16 years old and did not know that milk comes from cows. She though it came from a factory and was made like soda or something. I guess you can just imagine her reaction when her class took a field trip to a dairy farm. It is really sad and scary as to just how dumb people can be sometimes. No wonder TPTB can get away with all they do.

Sure, why such a sudden popularity of zynga games? Coz it is so easy to trick people into this warm fuzzy feeling of possesion, land, farm, sport car, whatever. Just few colored pixels resembling what you want and their choosen name on it. Oh, and some options to personalize it from a list of like 5 themes, and allowing your "friends" to take a look at it and interact in some feeble way.

Most of us played this mind trick as a children. Sand castles, dollhouses and whatnot, I clearly remember creating submarine from a bunkbed at friend's house under the influence of SeaQuest. Power of imagination.

Whats really alarming is that today's "adults" are doing the same thing, though would never admit it even to themselves. And there is no imagination anymore involved.

Unfortunately, I believe that this pride of intentional ignorance stems from the collective thinking that is being pressed onto the younger generation. The lack of "I" and the large presence of "We" definitely does have it's draw backs. The rewarding of "We" has many ramifications, one being "Why should I seek self improvement when others think it's fine not to?".

I know several older teens that are proud of the fact that they do not even open a book or use the internet to find out information. I'ts almost like reading is frowned upon by certain groups but memorization of ball team stats is paramount. The public schools no longer teach critical thinking. How to solve a problem and to weigh all the information given is essential. Our thinkers are slowly but surely becoming obsolete.

It's fascinating that we're all thinking along the same lines and seeing the same things. Medocrity is rewarded and standing out as being better than the rest, frowned upon if not actively discouraged. I don't know how the U.S. returns to growth and a respected place in the world when so much of the generations coming up now seem headed full speed into a life of Average to Below-Average all the way around. A you've both noted as well, this whole thing is just incredible to see.

Part of what I don't understand on this is how those running the system don't see it as well? In the strive toward no hurt feelings and never a bruised ego, we seem to lower everyone to the lowest common denominator like never before. It happened when I was in school, but not like it is now. People weren't happy about the situation and actually bragging about it. So much has changed and so little of it for the better in the last 10-12 years in particular.

At least nations like South Korea, Japan and China push academic achievement as more than a nice dream no one really works toward. I hate to think my kid will be riding a Chinese ship to a Chinese lunar resort or whatever they have in 30-40 years..but at this rate, Americans will simply be maintenance staff and we're doing it 100% to ourselves.
