I wondered about that earlier - not just aftershocks, but often preshocks, before the "big one"... and that didn't happen in Chile either.
I'm sure there's a simple explanation as to why that is, but I don't know what it would be.

Basically its the average number of earthquakes of certain magnitudes a year
Obviously its not going to be exact, so some years there are going more, and also they will be spread out across the globe.
So its all pretty normal! You've just decided to tak notice in 2012 as the worlds meant to explode or somet. But your 9 months early :|

Well yes I am sure it's pretty normal, but the question I have in trying to understand how all the plates interact with each other, is are these
lesser quakes a reaction to the large magnitude ones?
