More than 300,000 people have joined a campaign against UK PM David Cameron’s plan to legalise same-sex marriage

The Coalition 4 Marriage set up a petition against the plan, which has so far attracted more than 300,200 signatures. The group is calling on the Government to retain the current definition of marriage as the voluntary union between one man and one woman for life.

Colin Hart, the campaign director, said the surge in support since the Government began its consultation was further evidence of the unpopularity of the proposal.

“There has been a staggering response to the petition, launched last month, which shows just how many ordinary men and women care about this issue,” he said.

His rival campaign, which is backed by the British Humanist Association, the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, and other groups, is running its own petition in support of homosexual marriage, which has attracted 33,400 signatures so far.

The Telegraph

It is interesting that the anti-gay marriage petition has 10 times as many signatures as the pro-gay marriage petition.

Why is a civil union between homosexuals not enough?

Obviously 300,000 ignorant witch hunters have been reincarnated.

Why does anyone care? How do same sex couples being married effect
any of these petitioners? The petitioners certainly have an effect on gay couples.

This will be seen in the future as absurd as separate bathrooms for non-whites.
Those against this need to get on the right side of history and humanity.

Why would anyone want to burn a witch because they oppose gay marriage?

You are making no sense.

Gay civil union couples already enjoy all of the civil rights of heterosexual couples.

They just aren't allowed to call it a marriage, nor are civil unions governed under marriage laws.

Or as absurd as separate male and female public bathrooms?

That's because there are 10 times as many hypocrites who complain about government interference but want to legislate in our bedrooms.

Regardless of any snapshot taken of two petitions, common sense will eventually win out and this won't be an issue any longer. Anybody who is actually bothered by what another couple does needs to grow up.

Anybody who is actually bothered by another demographic gaining access to the same liberties that they have needs to rethink their citizenship, as they don't appreciate our trademark freedom.

Yet the European Court of Human Rights recently ruled that gay marriage is not a human right.

Gay marriage is not a human right, according to European ruling

I suspect that the vast majority of people really couldn't give a toss if gays have the right to marry or not.
They may resent what they perceive homosexuality being promoted in MSM but most people think that what consenting adults do in private is their own business and people shouldn't be discriminated against.

It's also one of them subjects where if people are opposed to it they are quite passionate about it and will go out of their way to express their opinion whereas the majority really just don't care and think there are far more important things to concern themselves with.

That's probably little consolation to most gay people.

I personally could care less of gays can marry or not. But i can see the argument for civil unions being enough. After all it's all the same rights as marriage so the issue boils down to a word. Makes for a poor argument in my opinion.

So, what you are saying is that those who have a majority should be able to tell the minority what to do? How to live their lives according to the "majority"?

I just watched a German movie called "The Wave"... it was interesting and I had to laugh at how society of the majority can skew a persons thinking ...and the people do not even realize it....

Marriage is a religious instutition ... the government has no business in being pushed into it by the majority who wish to supress a minority ..... even if it it homosexuality.

what peeves me is that because I have not gotten "married" I am short changed by the community because we live together for 19 years and engaged for 18 ... yet our relationship has lasted longer than most scantioned marriages.....

man or woman no piece of paper is ging to keep someone faithful... and being married has nothing to do with being faithful.

you are or your not ...... and that is what will be tested by time....

But this isn't about what consenting adults do in private.

Rather, a few gay pressure groups are demanding that the vast majority of hetrosexual people agree to give them moral and legal support by agreeing to a homosexual union being called a marriage.

Its called democracy. Its quite a popular system, where rights and obligations in society are decided by the wishes of the majority.

Don't care.

Majority has no right to "vote" over a minority.

Equality is a Human Right you don't vote on.

Would it be possible that it is FEAR that is motivating these so-called 'normal' men and women?

I mean, if gay people started to marry eventually that would lead to statistics. We all know that the current statistics for marriage (between a man and a woman) aren't pretty. This link is simply the divorce wikipedia entry. It's got some good info....

Anywho- what I'm getting at.... the fear thing...

Seems safe to assume that, at least at first, the statistics are gonna say that gay marriage is MORE successful than straight marriage. And straight marriage will become (even more) mocked. Examples of sham 'normal' marriages are all over the media, being done by people we are suppose to hold for our roll models.

I know a LOT of gay couples, who are monogamous, who have been together forever and have children. Happy children. Like whoa. And I know a lot of straight families... but honestly, the gay families seem happier. They've had to really work for what they know and love and believe in and that makes them thankful to have each other.

Straighty straights can just fall in and out at will... cause, well, that's normal.

So, fear? Possibly? The marriage union already looks kinda bad (statistically speaking, that is)...throw something 'they' are vehemently against into the mix and things start to get ugly.

I'm just sad that people are so damned petty, mean, horrible, etc. And to top it all off, they say it's ok, cause their God said it's cool to hate. Wth? :-(

I'm gonna go play with my puppies to bring some happiness back into my heart after focusing and this for so long... Ya! Puppies!!!

So what?

In my humble opinion I really don't see why they shouldn't have the same rights as anyone else.
What's the problem or arguemment against it?
Would it harm anyone if they were given the same rights?
We allow, and rightly so, people with different religious views the same rights as each other so why should sexuality make a difference?

I was just trying to point out why there is a disparity in numbers on the two petitions.

I think you are correct .. why is the government even involved in something like this? This dates back to the colonial days and before when the church was the state... the church is not the government anymore!

Conservative society has always been about control through the church. Now that it has ended the government in no longer in control of the theocrats and the populace demands the same equality across the board.

Errr sorry but that's not true.

The rights of many minorities are protected in many 'western democracies' and they are treat exactly the same as anyone else, why should a persons sexuality mean that they are treat differently to anyone else?

They already do. It is called a civil union.

Gay pressure groups are now demanding that hetrosexual people agree to what has tradionally been a hetrosexual insitiution - marriage - now being an institution that encompasses gays civil unions.

If hetrosexuals are happy to agree to this, then fine. If they are not, then that is their right.

You failed to answer any of my questions relating to why gay marriages are a problem and who they hurt.

A civil union is not the same as a marriage and why do the 'majority' have a right to dictate to a 'minority'?

Does that mean that the majority Christians have, or should have, a right to dictate to atheists and people of other religions?

This is probably only a 10th of the people that oppose this unholy matrimony.
