That's a completely different topic. You should always ensure your kids facebook has the highest privacy setting possible and make sure they can't be searched unless information they provide to someone is used.

And of course, encouraging social gatherings with their friends and keeping them part of a good family unit. Positive reinforcement for the win.

It has nothing to to with early. Once you hit the teenage years your body releases hormones to feel horny. I know fathers don't want to think about their daughters craving sex, but is a biological reality.

Nature drives us to reproduce, not society.

Well a 13 year old dressing like a slut is a bad thing but thats a parenting issue not society. You control what your teen wears because you have to buy it.

ooohhh.. you keep coming back with good points. i like that.
you do have good points. it is a parental issue. i guess my problem is why it is so popular among parents and children alike. my mother would get along with those 13 year olds and find no problem with anything. but that's her. and i'm me. and you're you.. and facebook is nothing compared to toddlers & tiaras. i guess i'm just scarred by all the pedophiles my mom brought around me as a child.

Only thing one can do is educate and make the kids be aware of their surroundings. It will be very very difficult to keep teenagers from following the mainstream culture which unfortunately comes with the advance in technology. How many aspects of their lives can we control? We cannot control them all since many of them are illegal by law (atleast in the US). Outside the US, it is a different story. However I thought about it as well as I have toddlers for now (a boy and a girl) that the only way to keep them falling into the trap is to make them aware of the traps though it comes at a price that they might be exposed to the FB, MS culture as discussed in the OP. What makes a different is the culture itself. Most of us are aware of what is morally right and wrong however most of us do not agree on a common belief system or atleast practice a common belief system that could possibly help our children. Diminishing cultural values is the real culprit. If the teachings and belief system are strong, then it should be able to withstand external elements and forces such as FB, MS social networks. My 2 cents.

I wish people would stop bashing social networking sites!!

Its only a tool for people to use as they see fit! Think of all the benefits it has brought us....we've never been able to communicate so efficiently!

As for it "sexualising" young girls...pssssttttt pashhhtttt....Watever!! I've used Facebook since school and I wasn't like the kids are today!! I used it for talking to friends, arranging gatherings, posting funny piks, and shoving my opinions down everyone elses neck lol!!

And I still use it for those things today.

I don't know whats got into them, but you cant keep blaming technology for it!!

There's only 4-5 years between me and my younger cusons, but I swear you would think I'm old fashioned compared to them!! The crap that comes out there mouths!! They practically use "BBM" as a dating site!!

I use my BBM as an alternate means to contact people in case of an emergency. I'm only 20, me and my friends were far from angles in school, but what i'm witnessing in the younger generation is actually VERY SCARY!!

Ill stick to my guns, you cant blame the tools!!! So that means we need to find the source of all this madness!!!

And I would say its parenting.....because I know I'd slap my kids silly if they dressed as sluts/yobs/whatever.......but there still seems to be a missing link, because I know many kids that are going astray who have respectable families that discipline them....

These sites ARE too blame, they were created for one purpose, to waste time, and too cause the kind of crap that is going on now.

Do you actually believe these were made for the good of anyone ??

Companies spending billions just so you can chat and find all the idiots you have known in life ??

"They were created with one purpose: To waste time"

Yea I'm sure that's what the creators were thinking when they made it. Not.

Obviously it was made for communication.

That's like blaming cutlery manufacturers for someone being stabbed.

I wasn’t bashing FB or social media in general…maybe my title was misconstrued. It’s not the fault of the social media sites.

These sites do make it easier for kids to do things they were never able to do before. Schools have dress codes, so girls wouldn’t be dressing provocatively at school. It would also be difficult for my daughter to even leave the house dressing provocatively. However, it would be very easy, in the privacy of her bedroom, to take and post those types of pictures.

Just an observation!

Facebook and other social media outlets are partially to blame for the problem, but in my opinion it really comes down to lack of parental vigilance in preventing said exploitation from happening. Many/most parents let their kids run rampant and unsupervised on the internet, thus leaving the raising of their kids to unknown strangers on a friends list and other potential predators/trolls. Social networking in itself can be a powerful tool that can be used for many positive purposes, but in the hands of a quickly devolving and morally inept generation with little supervision, it certainly brings with it many dangers that responsible parents need to stay on top of.

As stated before, the key is EDUCATION. You can't keep track of what your kids are doing if you don't understand how social media is evolving to further manipulate society. You can't teach your kids about the pitfalls of social media until you understand the issues yourself.

Educate yourself, then use that knowledge to educate your kids. You're not going to change the hundreds of millions of users out there, but at least you can protect your family and interests.

As if it was different 20,30 or even 50 years ago. Maybe the clothes changed because back then people were so prude, they looked like they live in a monastery. But even back then the younger people were trying to look different and even if there weren't 'sexy' clothes around, i bet a lot of young girls tried to show off some skin and to shock their parents.

On Topics as this i always get the impression only really old people post, who think back to the 'glory days' through rose-tinted glasses, everything was different and it was a perfect world when they were young.
Of course movies like "Rebel without a cause" were in reality made in the 1990's and transported back through time to the 50's right? People NEVER behaved like this back then

Get a grip people, i bet just as many teenagers #ed around in the 50's as they do today, there were just as many sluts and maybe some teenagers even were prostitutes. Think back to the Hippie era and 'Free love'. But maybe it was never as extreme in prude america than it was in europe. I heard enough stories from people who were young in the 60's and 70's, they tried just as hard to look sexy, get looks and had a lot of sex.
Don't play it off as we live in a bad world, it's the fault of technology and 'teh evil internetz'. People were always the same, only difference is back then nobody gave a # about it because nobody ever heard of what's going on in the world. Unlike today were everything is made into headlines and reported on Websites and message boards discussing everything to death.

These social network sites were made with good intentions so that people could communicate and get socially involved with others on their computers. But as it happens with most stuff, facebook got pretty big and now it is controlled by the ones in power for data mining, spying and most obviously showing ads.

Another analogy is forums, you can find informative forums (like one we are on right now) and you can also get access to porn/drug forums. Forum scripts were written with good intention but like most other things it can be used for bad. Another thing I can point out is monetary system, it was made to replace barter system and make it easy to trade but see where we are now. Do not blame technology/idea, blame people misusing it.

Yes, parents need to moniter and educate thier children using FB and other social media sites. The foolish things teenagers tend to say and do because of a lack of maturity, and "hormones" can really come back to "bite" them in the butts.

I think it's interesting to note that Mark Zuckerbergs "original" idea that ultimately lead to the creation of FB was born out of his desire to hurt and punish a girl that had rejected him romantically. He created a college site that "rated" how "hot" the girls were and encouraged other students, mostly male to rate and "judge" how the girls compared, or "ranked" against each other. He may very well be a "genius", but it seems to me a nasty, vindictive one.The guy turned his back on his best friend and partner, tells me alot about his character right there.

Use FB wisely, if at all, and understand that it has become a "tool" that is now being used to "profile" people, and that certainly gives me "pause"

Facebook own all content once uploaded and sell it quite frequently, it would be highly concerning to me that a child is posing near naked, facebook have no qualms about who they sell data to as dollars are dollars after all

You may find the images appear now on kiddydate or some sick # like that. How do you think dating sites can launch with 1 million "members" ? Cos they create fake profiles using pictures they buy from people like facebook.

Facebook needs to be destroyed, it has completey screwed up peoples interactions with one another and all for what, so the CIA can better predict how we will behave and Zuckerberg can get rich?

It is a social engineering tool designed to trick you into supplying valuable information which they can legally sell to third parties.

You may find this critiscims of facebook artice quite an eye opener
en.wikipedia.org...

I also dont understand why people ignore security professionals
www.darkreading.com...

Our number one choice for best social engineer was unanimous among the group. At first glance, the choice may seem rather odd, but this distinction goes to a man who achieved the following: he crafted a web portal and lured millions of people into his pocket. He established confidence and trust with his users, facilitating them to divulge the secrets of their lives by relinquishing personal information, habits, behaviors, activities, and media. He collected all of this information and then sold it legally for millions of dollars, unlike others who served harsh prison terms. Incredibly, he accomplished this in a time when identity theft has become household issue and guarding your personal information has become a way of life.

In case you have you not guessed our number one social engineer, it's Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook. Well done, Mark, 400 million people fell for your ruse

hey op!

Very interesting topic and I can certainly see your point and I often worry about what to do in that situation when I have children, I personally think teaching them to be modest and a bit more classy is the way to go

I think some girls do it too themselves though!... and are teaching their child the wrong things , I have seen mothers of young children doing that Duck face pout thing...looking in a mirror whilst taking a picture/ half naked ...it does not help the situation.

I know far too many young women who subject themseleves to it purposly. posting a picture of yourslef in a bikini in a toilet is bound to attract unwanted attention .. dosnt condone people abusing young girls/women im just saying that alot of them know better and should be setting examples to the younger girls

I saw a photo in particular that bothered me of a friend who had posted a picture of herself looking all dolled up (which i have no problem with) but then she was holding HER baby whislt taking a "pouty" picture of herself in the famouse mirror shot ...here is the bit that got me.. the baby was looking at the camera like she was to see if she looked good...

Now that baby is goin to grow up and think a cameras purpose is to take pictures of yourselfs in mirrors... *rolls eyes*

I was always taught by my mother to have at least some modesty and to leave things for the imagaintation / a partner to see in a bedroom not on FB photos. makes me cringe some of the pictures on fb..

Girls you are beautiful.. you dont need to take a picture of your half naked body/ pouting / caked in make up seriously... just smile and be yourself

EDIT: just to add also.. most of them KNOW that there is a privacy setting but they would rather the whole world see :/

Excellent points that help clarify some of the concerns I think we should all consider when allowing FB in our homes. It's so diabolical and "brilliant"in it's simplicity, as we willingly hand over personal information that once took marketing and research companies "effort" to aquire. I doubt Zuckerberg really understood at first what he created, but I'm guessing he "gets" it now, and his lack of conscience and integrity once again seem to be a factor.
